View Full Version : sst 45 driving tips?
I will be learning to drive a 45 this summer.I will be using my dads 93 hoffman.I dont have any seat time in a 45 tunnel. All my driving has been in kneel down boats.I will be getting my own boat for racing but that wont be until next year so i will practice with my dads rig.Any driving tips are appreciated. The boat was Dave Dewalds RC cola boat from the early 90s race season. Thanks guys.

Just as in the kneeler the throtle works both ways and same with the trim. A radio set helps out. The crew on the beach can read the attiude of the boat as you get the feel for it. You don't want to get to high early on. Flight time sucks. Cool, but it sucks. Be easy on the trim when you set the boat. If your out by yourself then you can float the corners until you get comfortable with setting the boat. If your with someone else watch the mirrors. Start slow and crank it up as you go. Oh yeh have fun cause you will :)

After starting in 25SS Hydro and DSH I loved being on my knees feeling the speed and spray. Wait till you get to turn right and left the G's. Oh yeh tight turns getting stuck to the side of the cell. Just like driving a sports car on rails.
I forgot the most important detail of testing.
THE DIVER
Tow boat and diver are recommended.

Go to a river or lake near by, drop a couple of floats, (short coarse) Just run!! Practice turning and useing your trim. If possible have someone video tape from shore line, and learn. What feels right and wrong from a kneel down boat is the opposite in a tunnel boat. Good luck and have fun!

One of the Hearns, not Steve, not Richard.....anyway, he has been in the Hall fo Cahmpions more any anyone else. Steven Dawe maybe very well be second most inducted into the APBA Hall of Champions.
Steven Dawe is no dummie, he can also drive a race boat. One thing Steven does is have his mother video each of his races He, Erine and Mary Jo review these tapes after each race. Steven has NOT been a tunnel Boat hall of Champions member, but when he is, I know he we feel this is a bigger award than any of his other...7-8 Hall of Champions awards...
OK, I remember......ED HEARN...The APBA's leading APBA Hall of Champion's driver...Ed can drive and deserves all his awards! Including saving APBA from the BEASTS!!!
This is the boat i will be learning with.My dad totally restored it and its beautiful.
