So far, my writings about props, here, seem to leave more questions than answers...
But let me try one post about area...
Five props in the picture...
Four lefts and one right...
The second from the left is on a Super Stock...Nostalga
Old School was big diameter, big area....But in those days they also ran 10-12 boats in a heat...
The first is a Cary Copy, Then a Menkins, and then smaller diameter Cary, Drag Boat prop, 2004 Super Stock wheel...
I believe big area is improtant on HEAVY BOATS like GN's...fast light weight boats, on smooth water, we have narrowed the blades, put an OURTBOARD cup in them and they are faster....
The 2004 prop, is very close to what I made Jullian Pettengill in the '80s..
Old School was left hand....

These four props are more of a history, but as power goes up, area usually comes down...
The brass one is OLD SCHOOL OJ Style, big ears.
Second is two blade Michigan, less rake than an OJ, in fact, basically no rake...
Three blade was made from cutting the two bldes at the hub and welding them together...
The cleaver is a 15 degree race, like the OJ rake, but less blade area on the tip...
Seeing the race props that I've seen over the years, let me say that a GOOD PROP is a GOOD PROP and GOOD PROPS are hard to find..
FYI the HOSS TRITON STYLE basically is an OJ only lager...Actually, the Super OJ with the "TEXAS"cut side. When Mercury made the HOSS STYLE, they called it an OFFSHORE, but is was round then like the OJ...
In an attempt to get them to pull skiers in ski racing I rolled the edge and gave it a TEXAS CUT...Now, this style is called the HOSS TRITON STYLE...
This pictures just kind of show the evolution of props...
Transom height sor sure, effect the shape of a wheel!!!

On the top post isn't the picture upside down?

I took the picture of the props on the floor...Only reversing the negative would change the rotation.....I Think!!!!!
OK, which picture is upside down??? The 11 1/8 is a left...the other is a right hand rotation!!!

What I meant was that the prop on the left is the rh ss & the others were lh. From the wording it looks like the picture was rotated 180 degrees, if you did that it would put the rh ss prop on the right side of the pic. (top pic) With the picture rotated I thought it made more sense, or I'm even more lost than I thought.

Just trying to figure out which prop was which not trying to be a wiseguy.

I wasn't trying to be a wise guy either...
Let's try this...Right hand rotation turns like a clock...
Left hand is counter clockwise...
The first is a Cary Copy, Then a Menkins, and then smaller diameter Cary, Drag Boat prop, 2004 Super Stock wheel..." Is the RH on the right isn't it?
Cary Style, Menkins , Cary Style, Menkins Style all lefts,
Stelling Style, right hand rotation...

But I am sure that they do different. I like the OLD OJ props and the Hoss is like one. If you look at a pringles chip you can see a neat water holder. I ran a champion hot rod in the bay for FUN, used the pretty prop........ one day I tryed the banged up prop...... boat went faster.:) Ron, if you had a cleaver prop, and the traling edge was past the prop center-line instead of at the center-line what would be the effect? Just wondering, Thanks. Dave S.

Over the years, I have seen some of he damnedest things work and work really well...that I get the feeling why doctors and lawyers say they "PRACTICE" law or medicine...I feel as IF I "Pratice" Propellers.. Truth is propellers are simple, find a good one and buy it....(Don't get a copy, as there really is no such thing as a "COPY" of a good prop...)...buy the one that works...
ADD:
Beloit, Wisconsin, I'd say 1980..Lee Sutter is KILLING THE FIELD in SST 120...He frigging chucks a blade....I check it out, and realize it is a 15, everyone else is running 16's and 17's... I go over and tell Buck Thornton to put your on your 15...He says it is slow, I tell him Sutter was kicking *** with a 15...Buck puts on the 15 and wins the SST 120 World Championships...as Sutter didn'nt have another one like the one he broke...and before it broke, Sutter was the CLASS of the FIELD...
