Growing up in a family where working on outboard motors was a 24-7 job, I watched, from my trike, my dad file lower units, many he filed for hours and he shortened the skegs (This was before people jacked the motor up and needed more skeg)... All my life, my dad, stressed the need to reduce drag, especially under water drag...

When I first saw The Bounty Hunter, in Powerboat, leaping like Jack the Bear, those gearcases with no skegs "JUMPED" off the page...I realized, hells, bells a twin doesn't need skegs....I said, "Damn, this Billy Martin must be a smart sumbitch, no wonder he wins..."...

I never met Billy Martin, but always respected his innovation in Offshore Racing...He may not have "invented" the no skeg on twins..but his was the first I ever saw...

Later, 1970, I borrowed a boat that my dad and I had built for Jeff Weatherby of Needles... He had named the boat The Bounty Hunter. I won the DU Nationals in that boat, I actually had several people, that year, ask me if the Offshore Boat, The Bounty Hunter, was mine....I'd look them in the eye and say.....are you f&^king dreaming???

We HAVE A SPORT TO SAVE, one person at a time...THANKS FOR POSTING....I would love to see more of your photos, Billy!!!!

Frank
I have lost both of my parents and know how hard it is. Keep him in your thoughts everyday and it will help ease the pain.
Bless you

Billy Marting is a great guy and, years ago, a great friend. He was one of the super-stars of early off shore racing.

Anyone remember the cover shot on MB&S many years ago of Billy and his boat?

I remember the photo in Powerboat that showed the look on his and his co driver's faces when they got DQ'd for racing through the spectator fleet while trying to get to the check boat.

The most fun we have had is racing with the Bounty Hunter.
