I would prefer the blue stripe Twister 1 cowlings but the red stripe twister cowlings would work as well. Whatever is available is what I will take! lol

Inline6,
I am also restoring a Twister! Do you have or know where I can get a set of the long exhaust gaskets?

You need to make them. Just get a chunk of gasket material and trace the outer exhaust log cover and each hole, then cut it out. Kim Cleckler had some but he used them I believe. It works because its just to hold the water out and the originals were identical. Heck, mine had a gasket cut out of a cereal box on it!

Thanks for the info. I know I can make them but was hoping to find some. I talked to Kim some time ago when he had some. I raced the Twister one season and had a lot of trouble getting water in side, I had hope to find good gaskets and avoid that problem. Ceral boxes, wow!!!!

Can you tell me the correct lenght of the plug wires for the Twister. A set of standard lenght came with the Twister I bought. They are two short to go around the intake side of the engine. I see Grubb has 30 inch wires but not sure if theyare long enought. I have measured and it very close with 30 inch wires. Also do the wirs go around the carb linkage or behind it?

Thanks for the picture, Ray!

Could you show us the insides of the exhaust side when you get a chance? A Twister recently sold on eBay and there was some talk on Screamandfly about the flange where the silo attaches to the leg

Here are some pictures of Don Bridges' Twister

Sam ,thank you for the pictures. They help me with some parts that were not on mine. Also show me how to rout the plugs wires. I will send pictures of the exahaust side when I take it down again to make gaskets. Still would like to know how long those plug wires are!

Sam,
How much did that Twister sell for on E Bay. Do you have an item number?

ebay Twister (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5666713908)

It didn't have a lower unit, it went for $1500

Don Bridges or his son should be able to tell you how long those wires are

Ray,
Nice picture layout.
I'm not a merc expert but I don't remember the twisters I've seen having that type of lower unit with 'Patent Pending' cast in. Looks bigger than the speedmasters I've seen. What version is that and can you post a picture of the whole unit?

That is the lower unit that came on Twisters. Merc called it the MC-1 Speedmaster. It was originally made for sterndrive use, but was quickly superceded by the MC-2 for sterndrives. It was brought back on the Twisters because the left hand Super Speedmaster was not tough enough for 150+ hp. They also recommended it for long endurance racing.

The comparison picture is courtesy of Crazyhorse on Screamandfly

What is the horsepower and model years?

Mark75H

There was no official horsepower rating on the Twisters. The only time power is mentioned in the press releases I have regarding them, it says they have the same top end power as a 1250BP open stack motor, but more mid range power. Earlier press releases on the 1250BP claimed 155 hp.

So, 155-160 hp for a red Twister or blue Twister-1.

They were made in 1971 and 1972.

Ray, did you ever get your plug wires made? I can measure some if you need me too. I can also take some pics to show the routing if you like. ~Scott
