What a great shot. Gary has never built a boat that was to happy being stuck to the water. I was always told 'The higher you fly it, the smoother the ride'. I think this is a perfect example..........

I hope I don't appear to hijack your thread - but had to share these pics.
These were taken at the 40th anniversary "Great race" in Nanaimo - it's not mini hydro's but it's still a boat race :)
Kent (080) in mid air, that's some hang time he's got going there, although we ALL got that but didn't all get on film like this.
The second one, it's me but it's not me with the hang time, check out the boat behind me there, mid air.......:)
I only made it 5 miles and some of that hang time got me and put me 4 feet underwater briefly - dont' recall really what happened other than I was flying one minute, swimming the next!

Looks good Dave. How'd you do?
That photo is a year old from Constatnine. I ran third with the 350's last year, but finished further back in 250. The boat is painted now (red, white and blue). We managed to finish 4th in 250 out of 20 entries. I benefitted greatly from a restart of the final heat (too many gun jumpers to count). One of my pipes broke at the start of the final heat and the restart gave me time to repalce it. In the re-run, I finished second. Missed third-place to Ben Thompson by 19 points. The terrible heat caused considerable attrition amongst engines and drivers alike. Numerous stuck pistons, as the engines were pumping hot lake water on Sunday with 100 degree heat.

What I appreciate about this rde, is that the back end comes up with the nose. The attitude is comfortable. Sometimes, I have found myself too complacent on the straights and have to remind my pea brain how fast we are travelling!!

My 700cc Pugh used to run the same way. Straight and level, but almost completely airborne.
"Sometimes, I have found myself too complacent on the straights and have to remind my pea brain how fast we are travelling!!".........Cool you mentioned that, as I thought I was the only one who found myseld "Too comfy" with the ride and having to give my head a shake to concentrate on the task at hand.
I have driven A number of different hydro's: Marchetti, Butts, Yales etc., both conventional and pickles, but never, NEVER drove anything as comfy and absolutely predictable as my Pugh. Combine that with a Nydahl steering hub and you could almost take a nap on the straights.
Nice looking ride Daved.

When all race boats are going in the same direction on good water you don't really get a reality check until you're in a laydown and a 3 lb. fish launches about windshield height just off your left sponson at around 116 mph. The visual looks like a fish shot out of a cannon toward you. A narrow miss.
Of course a racer would just record it in his mind and keep the throttle down. It's only years later when you think about it that you would post a  symbol.:D
That brought up an example of "What the heck was that".............We were racing in Lake Worth down in south Florida and I dove in ahead of Jim Stone in BOH when an Ibis lifted out of the water just as I exited the turn. It hit the top of my helmet and continued to shore without any indication of being hurt. When I got back to shore after winning the heat, the bird was still standing on shore................

In the summer of '88, Yamato sent us an experimental engine to take to Stewartby, England for the 500cc world championships. Since we didnt have a 500 boat stateside, we had to use the 350cc "Rent-A-Wreck". Although at this time, it was still kinda new.
Yamato said the engine had 150 hp. After it folded two blades over on a four bladed prop, we believed them. The boat was a rocket.

1985 took us to Boretto Italy for the OB/350cc world championships. We had met Guiliano Landini in Dayton,OH for the 1982 OA/250 and OB/350 world championship.
At Boretto, he was racing 350cc WC and 250cc Italian national. This is his 250cc Butts running pretty loose. His 350 boat was a Popoli.

That is great photo Eric. I do not believe that we ever got our 4-cylinder 250 to run that well. Were you using a 12:15 or a 11:15?
epugh66
01-08-2007, 10:22 AM
It's probably an 11:15. Our Yamato's ran a similar ratio of 12:16. That boat won the 250 nationals in 1987 with Gary.

Eric - can you remember the monumental battle between Manfred Loth & Giuliano Landni at Stewartby for the Worlds in 1988? It was settled in the last heat when Landini caught a bad wave, his boat reared up and landed hard on its side smashing it into pieces. Talk about taking your boat home in a grocery bag!! - there was hardly anything left of it. When you took a close look at its construction you realised that is was built super light and for only one purpose.......to win the Worlds!
That weekend the Russians played second fiddle to Loth and Landini (lots of problems with boats and engines for the USSR team), but it was reported that a local speed cop clocked Alexei Ischutin at 120mph on the back straightaway using his speed gun. Ischutin made up for it the next year when he won the 0-500 Worlds in Milan (1989)

Hard to start
I should have said "hard to pull" It seemed we had to have it right up on compression before we pulled it or it would kick, not quite like the four cylinders. Us weak armed, sissy 250 drivers weren't the burly men the engine needed.
