I believe it was taken in DePue in the mid eighties. The "thing" is his fuel tank!!

His Son Mark, aka BustinLoose III on this site summed it up on another thread:
"Ah, Jeff that picture brings back memories. Someone had gotten the whole series of that event on camera and it sits proudly displayed on the lower level of my parents house. That is Ron Shurilla ducking as he goes by. Funny thing, he made it out the next heat. Only thing hurt was his pride and a bent steering bar. If memory serves correctly, he finished 3rd overall in that class that time."

Great pictures.:cool: I've been thrown out to many times to count.(just a quick shock):eek: The ONE time I blew over it seemed like it took 5 minutes. Funny how it stays in the back of your mind every time the motor starts.

AOJesus, Jeff is correct. It was in the late eighties (my memory is going, the exact year is lost at the moment) at the national championships in DePue, IL. That is the same series of pics that I mentioned earlier. The object is the fuel tank. As a matter of fact, that may also have been the same year he won 700 hydro there. He was a little sore after that, but I'm sure the final results made up for it. Jeff, where did you get those pictures anyway? The boat actually went around twice. Not sure why he didn't let go sooner. The picture with the fuel tank is what was used for the next year's nationals flyer. We've got one hanging in the shop. Some friends have one of those pictures and the one of me standing the runabout on end (from last year's nationals) next to each other and they quote: "like father, like son." :D

pics are from 87 marty came out of the box smokin that year. not bad for coming out of retirement that year. i know he won 700 hydro for sure .
