It's been so long and I have forgotten so much, but I do remember Bob Hooghkirk as a good friend. He always had a smile on his face when I saw him and as little as we came into contact with one another, it was almost as if he were a neighbor. When a boat racer is no longer racing, most wives just drift away. And that is natural. I am sure we met at some point, but I don't have a face in my mind. You, however, have stayed with the sport that Bob loved, and have contributed lots of time. I think that's because that's where your and Bob's friends and lives were. When I think of Bob, I also think of Pete Voss and vice-versa.:D So I came across these photos of Bob on the front straight at Alexandria getting some splash and thought I would dedicate them to Bob and your being one of the steadfast workers that keeps boat racing going. Without people like you, boat racers could not challenge the ever changing conditions of water beside a competitor.

Excellent Pics. Wayne---

Dont't know if you knew that Bob ran the rescue boat for the USTS for quite a few years. He and Fred Mason put in endless hours of work running the rescue boat. At that time Cookie was cheif scorer for the USTS. It's because of volunteers like them we are still able to keep our sport going.

I didn't know that Bob ran the rescue craft. After I got out I lost total contact except for Joe Rome giving me the annual update on how the Texas boys did at the Nationals. We owe a lot of thanks and gratitude to all those support people who without them there would be no organized racing.

Wayne,

Thanks for the great pictures of Bob. This one of him going over was the one time that I didn't go to the race. I do remember he came home quite sore. Once boat racing is in your blood it's hard to get it out. Pete & I have been in racing forever as our Dad also raced. Once Bob stopped racing & took the rescue boat job, I think he had just as much fun, especially when Fred Mason joined up with him. They always came in laughing.
