Hi, I have a 1960 merc model 200 with the super hurricane motor and a late model phelon mag. I read the page on the mag rebuild but still am having trouble getting spark.

I have new points, plugs and condensers as well as new coils, all the parts are from Sierra Marine. At first I had spark on both plugs and it sorta ran good, then I had spark on only one plug, I just took everything apart and cleaned it all good and reinstalled the parts with a smallest dab of dielectric silicone compound (from ancor marine) to assure a good bond and prevent
corrosion, now I have no spark.

Bill - Do you own or have access to an ohm meter? If so I have some checks you can do.

yes I do, I finally got spark but still want to do the test's.
I removed the mag plate from the motor and cleaned all the years of crud that was impossible to see unless the plate was removed, and when I re installed it I had big fat sparks on both plugs. Looks like it was a bad ground between the mag plate and the powerhead itself.

Bill, I just went through the same thing with a 1963 Merc 200 that I bought off Ebay,a"Ran good last year" motor. No spark at all but after cleaning the points it ran fine for a while and then no spark again. Replaced the top crankshaft seal and it has been fine since.
