View Full Version : 6 HP and Under Outboard Racing

At the Puddinstone Antique Wet Meet, it was decided we needed more "Wet Boats", as we only had two hit the water....
So, we discussed a 6HP and Under Race....
Here was the "PLAN":
Any outboard 6 HP and under, throw on a Jon Boat and run around a course.....
Seemed OK, but I got to thinking:
So, I called Ernie Dawe about building a boat for this 6 and Under Class.
Seems Ernie had a John Boat he uses to patrol when they go testing...So, he took some measurements and designed a SMALL "JON BOAT Hydro"...
First "OFFICIAL WET MEET" will be at Lake Caquilla, La Quinta, CA in May of 2007..
1. Everyone will use the same boat.
2. Driver, motor will weigh in before their run..Lead shot will be added to make weight of heaviest driver......
3. Speed will be measured with a GPS....
4. 2 laps on a Figure 8 Course, Le Mans, Dead motor start.
5. Figure 8 course will be hand timed by three stop watches...
6. May have a class 9-14 year old drivers...
The Antique Club has insurance for wet meets, and running one boat at a time, seems this will be OK with APBA's insurance...But will work on the details..
I been looking on E-Bay for 6 HP, seems there are many cheap....Thought I'd buy several, and then we could let non-motor owners race...
Any interest??? Or is this another Ron Hill CRAZY idea???
BUT, Ernie is building the boat....

Stock or Modified? :D

I think, we could be GENTLEMEN about this, and declared "STOCK" or "Modified", before the event...
I was thinking that STOCK should use an aluminum propeller, but??
With a LeMans start.......With motor stopped...a Modified motor might not like to start????
I ASSUME the goal of this "EVENT" would be to get more people on the water....
There may be a difference in OLDER 6 hP that are not prop rated horse power...This could bring another variable into the equation....
Personally, I was planning on finding an Evinrude 6, polishing the gearcase, and make a cool little prop and test it...
With no entry fee, and maybe Large Diet Coke for the winner, it seems we could come up with enough classes for everyone...
What were you thinking??
No boaters.....would be given the boat, motor and propeller, and weight....and told to GO!

Sounds like a great plan. Now I have to find a motor???
Can we bring our own boats to the lake just to run them for fun?

Ernie Dawe, who puts on the Annual Event, thinks APBA will have no proble with the Antique Outboard Club using the water, when they aren't racing...
Sand to the water's edge...behind the sand is grass with date palms...Camping is encouraged..
Ernie was a BOD of APBA for years, so, he'll check out the Antique's club's insurance..
I'm hoping for some Flat Bottoms, SHOW ONLY unless ZOOMIES, and I'm hoping to see some Fiberglasstict boat there too!!
There will be a kneeldown race there also...
Hoping, too, to have the Solar Boat teams out for some "TESTING"...

Hey Ron... there a thread on Hydroracer that they started a 5hp Briggs and Straton class in Florida last year on a spec MiniMost boat. May want just touch base or read and see if you guys can learn/help one another...?

I think it's a great idea to have a small class. Many people I talk to at shows shudder at the thought of sending their 9 year old out in a 40mph class considering many of their own pleasure boats wont even go that fast.

When I saw Briggs and Stratton, I thought "inboard". I had no idea they made outboards.
This is not what your looking for but thought I would post it anyway. Its a junior inboard hydroplane The canopy is to make it look good on the trailer, and comes off when racing

Andrew,
The class, is one of our junior classes.
We have 3 Junior classes, all can use inboard or outboard, as long as they are under the horsepower, hydroplane, displacement, tunnell. We dont care. The hp limits and ages have been worked out between the APBA (Thats Australian PBA) and maritime authorities.
This is one of the very few inboards and the only hydroplane I have seen.
J1 - 6hp kids from 8 years
J2 - 10hp kids from 10 years
J3 - 15p kids from 12 years
I saw it perform at the Unlimited Displacement World Cup here recently, and went very well.
It comes from another state than I do, and it knocked my socks off when I saw it on display at a major event. Its called "Cordial and Boats" his old mans boat is "Beer and Boats" and is also a hydroplane, the paint schemes are also complimentry.
I'll put some feelers out and see what I can find out, post it here, or send you a PM or an E Mail.
PS According to the web site the worrlds largest manufactuerer of racing engines is .... Briggs and Stratton !!!
They use them in kids drag racing, go karts, kids speedway etc. They produce a range of racing engines and parts, and have a good deal of information available.

Ron- Do like the teakers in the midwest chapters do, run stock and mod 3 hp
and the Evinrude Zephyrs. Amazing what the guys come up with in the mods.
You should attend the big meets at either Constantine, MI or Tomahawk. Check it out on the AOMC web site.

Richard- the guys in the Mid West are getting those Zephyrs running pretty good. Even have the quiet tuned pipes. I think that the man to contact would be Roger Dykehouse. He has done some porting and a few other things.
Have fun.
