Its not everyday one gets to be first at something.:D
My name is Steve Crabtree and I was born and raised here in Quincy, IL birthplace of the Quincy Loop Engine. I was introduced to Mr. O.F. Christner founder of Quincy Welding & Marine when I was 12 years old and met Paul Christner when I was 14 and spent all of my summers and free time as a teenager at Quincy Welding & Marine at the corner of 5th and State Street learning about boat racing and helping out. Where on this planet could anyone find a better teacher than Chris.
I have a lot of fond memories from Quincy Welding & Marine and will share them with you in the near future.
I want to thank you Ron and Ted for starting this forum and hope a lot of people will start visiting your site.

Steve,
Great to hear from you again. I'm glad we finally have a forum for Quincy Racing fans to meet and talk about Loopers, Quincy Mercs, Z engines & everything else related to the heritage of Quincy Welding & Precision Machine. I've been really busy this summer but I am digging through years of old pictures and other related racing history and will see if I can get some of these posted over the next month or so. Please tell everyone about our new meeting place on Ron's site.
thanks,
Paul
PS: You might even see a "Quincy Speed Secrets Revealed" race secret or 2 here in the future.

Steve,
I have not met you, but I have heard of you. I talked a lot to some of th guys you hang around with now. You bought one of the boats I built for SEH/EMH. Talked a lot to Gene East at the NBRA race in Centrallia IL. He mentioned you had one of the boats I built and was going to try and run a 44 Merc. I sure hope to see you at a couple races this next season.
My dad Lyle Mason, races with the NBRA as well in the EMH class. He raced Pro for some time before switching to Mod. I currently race Mod in the bigger classes. Although there is a project on the table this winter that should turn out interesting for next season and mix things up a lot.
At any rate, take care, and I hope the boat does you well. I drove it once for Burt when testing it on the maiden run at DePue IL (AOF Nat's) so kind of ironic it ends up with someone from the Quincey Crew. P.S. - This boat would make one hell of a 350CCH.............

David,
I remember meeting your dad in 1974 or 75 at a AOF race at Lake St.Louis. His nickname at the time was "Mr. C" Lyle Mason, that's because he had the fastest C Mod in the country for quite some time. When your dad showed up at a race the race was for second place for everybody else because their was no doubt who would finish in first.
I bought Bert's Mason Built MJR Hydro but due to work and other events I only made it to one race this year, that was the NBRA's race at LaGrange Mo. The mag died on my E after 1 1/2 laps and I didn't have a spare. My first year back after 25 years away from racing was not a good one. Bert did tell me that the Hydro was the best turning boat he had ever owned.
I want to build a Super-E for it but am not sure which engine to build. Almost everyone is telling me to go with a 3 cylinder OMC. But there are quite a few old 4 cylinder 650 Merc's around here that I could pickup cheap. Do you have a sugestion on which would be the best engine to build for racing in FE/SE class?

Took me a while to get back to the thread.
Ya, dad still has a good C Merc we want to build up to prove the Yamatos don't rule all the time.
For a Super E engine I would reccomend the three holer. They are super cheap to build, and are easy to find in most any junkyard. They seem to dominate the class as well. Burt's Super E engine is a pretty good one. Ralph Cook has about the fastest one around in the country. He is Short Course Nat Champ and Long COurse Nat Champ in NBRA. I know he is faster than the APBA guys as I have raced against both.
Ralph might give up a couple secrets to. The biggest secret I have is lots of testing, you can make a good engine much better with lots of testing, and make a great engine the best with lots of testing.
There is a thread somewhere on this site explaining the best blocks to ues for Super E, or Formula E in APBA, same class.
Hope to see you around at a couple races this next season. Give us a hollar if you need anything.
Dave
