Height Checker that the inspectors use. Brown Tool & Machine makes a nice one for under a hundre bucks I believe. They also make the offical checkers for the J, AXS, A, well all the dam A Stock classes for inspectors. We bought one for Ashley in J and AXS. WOrks well and helps you get done faster as it takes the guesses out of heights. Slap this on after you pecker check it and you know if it is legal.

I am not a stocker. If I were to have to measure a boat with a step, I would assume to measure it from the rear most portion, but then I am not a stocker and don't know the specific rules. Ashley's boat did not have a step in the bottom, so we had no trouble figuring it out.
I would like to start my grandson racing, in my day 'J' was a great starting class then on to 'A'. I wonder if this is still true.

David (981M) - Yes the junior class is still going strong. Nowadays they actually have two junior classes. The beginers class is "J" hydro and runabout's using the 15 OMC "A" class enginge with a restrictor plate and the newer Mercury 15 two stroke. The starter age for this class is for 9 year olds up to 16 year olds. Then you can also have your youngster step up during that age to the AXS class in the junior catigory. This class uses the same motors but the restrictor plate hole is larger in the boats using the OMC engine and the mercury engine runs without a restrictor due to it's detuned state from the factory. If you buy an OMC 15 "A" engine you can have your child racing with the same engine all the way into the "A" class. My wife and I got our son racing 3 years ago at the age of 10 and we all love it. He will be competing in the AXS class's (Hydro and Runabout) this up and coming season. He has outgrown the "J" class. If you have a child and want them race this is the way to go! Great fun.
