Change in plans - just figured it out, most of my old time racing buddies were members of Outboard Club of Chicago and most are long gone.
I think we will stay home.

Wayne, Gene is absolutely right about your Dad, yours then, yours forever!!!
Also thinking about
Manuel Canarkis(mayor of Bakersfield)
Bob Ziemer
Rocky Stone
Joe Mechelini
Just heard about Dick Schoponic(sp)
What history we have written in the last few posts. Can you imagine how big the room would have to be for all the championships and hi-point trophys that are listed here. Let alone the wonderful personalities that are listed. Oh boy, who could get a word in edge wise.

I really appreciate that. And Ray.....I just got off the phone with Joe and he told me about Dick. We are all so sorry to hear about that.
And you are right about those guys Ray. I also thought about Joe Michelini, but forgot to post it. There's some real history there and a warehouse of artifacts that would be perfect for a museum in DePue.
One I thought about that I was going to post until I read what Gene posted, and held off on was Ray Nydahl. But then Pete doesn't post much stuff, and as his Dad was a well known, well celebrated racer, I couldn't wait for Pete.
And a few other well know ones
Marshall Eldrege
Dale Sellers
Mr. Leavandusky. I say Mr. because that's what he was to me as a young racer and I always called his son Stan instead of Butch, because that's what I knew him as when I was racing. It was after I quit I heard Stan referred to as Butch. I'm thinking though that Mr. Leavandusky was also called Stan and may the THE STAN in Stan's Custom Pistons rather than Butch.

Stan Leavundusky, Sr. aka "The Old Man" I saw him drive his last race - C-Service Runabout at Concordia, MO. Came into the first turn on the outside, shut the door on Stan, Jr "Butch", and won the race. First time in a boat in about 10-15 years.

Seems to me, that Joe has some organizational Skills...Seems Joe Rome should be a committee of one, to handle this complete list of who's coming and who'll be there in spirit...
Leave it up to me, I write myself notes to remember my notes, then I leave the notes somewhere!!!!
This Re-Union going to be fun....
Did Nick Marchetti make it to DePue, or only Stock Nationals...?
Billy DeSilva will be there in spirit...and Ralph will be there helping Tim Weber pass inspection is C Service...
Did I read Bill Fales name being there in Spirit???
What was Billy Seebold's brother-in-law's name??? Bob McFarland, Bob passed working props in Grandpa Seebold's basement...When I go, I don't want to be working props!!!!
How about the Tolfords???
Millie Harrison???
Waldman have kids???
Maybe, Alan Ishii will come???? Alan????
Anyone see the January issue of Powerboat???My son is driving his Parker Winning MOD VP, but he has Jim McKean's 25 year old parachute jacket on...I bought the jacket, in Louisiana, last spring for me, as it fit me, from Dudley Malone...It looked good to me for $100 bucks....Bill Flaunlaroy, said, that jacket is 25 years old, at least, throw it away..Well, Harris stole the parachute for his golf cart and Chad wore it a Parker...And I don't have a jacket...
ADD: Stan Leavandusky, Sr, all my boats that my dad and I built had Leavandusky pulleys on the steering bar...

Was wondering if you guys have decided which day the actual reunion will be on, i.e. Thursday or Friday ??
I will be attending and am trying to figure out my schedule so I can make my motel reservation. If things go right, I will be bringing Dick Pond with me.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in DePue.

I spoke with Bill Seebold Jr. at his Dad's funeral about coming to the reunion.
He acknowleged that was an open weekend for the tunnel boats , however the St. Louis race, which he promotes, is the following weekend.
He isn't sure if he'll be able to attend due to final preparations for the St. Louis race.
Hopefully if enough of us let him know how much we want him to be at DePue, he can find time available.
BTW:
For those who plan to come to DePue and will be in the Midwest area anyway, extend your stay, come to St. Louis and see the best Champ boat race in the country

I got a phone call today from John Herberg. John goes way back in racing and was a long time friend of O.F. Christner.
He is coming to DePue and bringing his trailer of vintage outboard race boats.
On that trailer he has a couple of hydros once owned and raced by none other that the great Bill Tenney.
How's that for some boat racing history?
John also gave me some leads on racers who have dropped off the radar screen.
Everybody knows someone like that. Let's get the word to these guys and get them to DePue as well!

Add Lucille Oshner to list of attendees at the Reunion.
For the benefit of you Konig drivers who never heard of her, Lucy was the glue that kept Quincy Welding together.
She wasn't a welder or a machinist or a mechanic. She couldn't drive a boat, in fact she's scared of water.
Lucy was the office manager, bookkeeper, typist, payroll clerk, and general all round girl Friday.
Lucy was Chris's most loyal employee. She sat at her desk at 5th and State St. from 1954 to 1983.
The last time I saw her was at the Memorial Race for Chris. It will be great to see her again.

I received an E-mail this morning from Dick Austin. He is coming to the reunion at DePue and bringing a trailer with not 1 but 4 fully rigged cab-over F-Hydros.
Can you imagine having 4 of these beautiful peices of racing history?
He needs help finishing 1 of the motors. He needs 3 Turner piston blanks that he can turn to 2.475" plus he needs an exhaust filler block.
If you can help, call me 217 223 6901 or email me ASAP and I will forward the info to Dick.
Thanks

Gene I remember the photos in Roostertail of Richard Austin's rig. I am looking forward to meeting him.
Denny Henderson sent me a photo I received today of myself on the outside, Denny in the middle and Jane Smith on the inside. Denny was proud of the photo that was the start of a heat in A hydro at Alexandria. N.O.A. World Championships. I'm thinking 1971. Denny said he wanted to contribute that pic to the fundraiser at DePue. I was excited when he described it. Now that I have seen it, I know why he treasured it. The angle at the start shows all three boats. I am very proud to be in a pic with Denny and Jane. She was a great pioneer in alky racing, as many have attested.
We are going to restore it, and we will maybe autograph it if we get the chance.

One of the best outboard mechanics ever to turn a wrench will not be at the reunion as planned.
Jack McGrury, an important part of the success of the Quincy Looper motors died this morning after a long illness. Jack was so intent on being at DePue he even arranged to have his regular Saturday dialisys treatment performed at the hospital in La Salle.
For further information, please refer to the thread started by Art Neadeck earlier today.
Jack will be saddly missed by all who knew him.
Please remember Sandy and their family in your prayers.

David Christner called yesterday to say he plans on being at the reunion. We already know Paul is coming.
Their brother John has had bi-lateral knee replacement surgery and has indicated he probably will not be able to attend.
Hopefully, that situation may change. It certainly would be great to have all three of Chris's sons at the reunion.
The list keeps growing. This is going to be GREAT!

We should all be there as well. As long as we can work out all the bugs in the 350CCH. If not racing, I will try to make sure we get there for the reunion at least. Got a phone call over the weekend from Stanley Leavendusky Jr.
He said he was just sitting on the the porch sipping on a scotch and water thinking about the good old days. (I can't believe Butch would SIP anything)
He suggested we need to invite Bob Lowery to the reunion. Bob raced in the 50's and 60's when he lived in St Louis. According to Butch, Bob now lives in the Dallas area.
How about it Wayne and Joe. Do you have any leads on Bob? I have no idea how to contact him. I also have not been able to find Jerry and Paul Simison,
Dick Hoppenrath, Jerry Parrot, or Jerry Peterson.
These guys need to be there, Help!!
By the way, Butch promised to bring the photo sequence of his famous backflip that didn't happen. He said his son-in-law blew it up to poster size and has it posted on the wall at their favorite watering hole in Little Rock.
Apparently a lot of sprint car racers hang out in this place and Butch wanted to show them what a real ride was.

I never knew Bob, but maybe if Butch knows that he is in Dallas, maybe he can help with some leads. I have been in contact with Paul Simison and he lives in Florida now. I don't know if the Simison's will be able to make it. Phil Wagner (who we also hope will show up) may be able to track down Dick. Heck, they are both BRF members I think. I'll send some messages.:D In fact, I think I remember seeing that Jerry Peterson joined and it took me too long to find some pics to post the welcome here. Let's go to work on these guys Gene. Look them up on the membership roster. But I don't know how to find Jerry Parrot. Maybe the Krier's will know if somebody will get in touch with them. And how about Wayne Walgrave? Phil Howard? Barry Wilson? The list goes on.
I found an address for Bob Lowery in Dallas but no phone number. I called Jerry Simison's house but his voice mail is turned off. I left a message for Wayne Walgrave at his house and talked to his sister in law in hopes he would make sure to follow up on the reunion. I'll keep trying for some of the others but will need at least a state I can search..................
After U. S. search, the only Gerry Parrot that comes up is in Weslaco, TX. No Jerry shows up.................

Wayne,
I talked with Jerry Simison on Monday. He is very much in to making target guns and attends shows regularly. He said that he will be finishing one show when we are having the reunion and heading to another immediately thereafter in St. Louis. Jerry did mention that he sees Phil Wagner every week end & that Phil has talked about the reunion. Perhaps he will attend.
I believe that the Lowrey's inially helped Billy Seebold build his tunnels. Maybe Billy knows where the Lowrey's can be located. I don't believe that Billy will be at the reunion as his big annual Champ Boat race is the next weekend.

Well, I haven't called John Schubert back, yet, (He's in DePue) as he left three messages and being A.D.D. by the time I hear the third message, I've forgotten all he's asked, done and said...
But here goes, what I remember...
FYI: John Schubert T.A.R.T. Racing ...TART stood for Totallly Amateur Race Team, but over the years,it has changed to TALENTED AMATEUR RACE TEAM...More later...
1. There will be plenty of BEER, don't worry. (Not free but plenty).. Corn too...and TRhe National Pepper Association will be represented by John Riner Woods from St. Louis, Missouri)...
2. There will be a tent ON THE MAIN STREET for EVERYONE to hang out.
3. There is plenty of room for motorhome parking and and area to display your stuff, not just boats and motors...Bring magazine, pictures, parts, trophies....
4. Fred Hauenstein WILL have Jerry Waldman's Marchetti D Hydro, Quincey Loop D there for display.
5. The VWF Hall will have mixed drinks.
6. The men's club will handle the DAILY Bar-B-Que and beer sales.
7. We'll be selling DePue Reunion T-Shirts out of or near the tent.
8. You need to pre register, so Johnny Scubert's wife can get all the name tags and stuff together.
9. There will be a slient auction in the BANK. I 'm having 25 plaques made to auction off. (See picture...rough draft)..But we'd be happy to auction off any donated items, also (No ex-wives or girl friends, please).
10. I sure as hell don't want to take credit for all that has been done so far. Jeff Lyte and Paul Christener designed the T-Shirts. Ann Fitzgerald of APBA Clothing assisted with the design and printed the shirts. Joe Rome calls me once a week, keeping me motivated on task. John Schubert has BEEN THE MAN for keeping the wheels on this Reunion plan. Wayne Baldwin has provided some great photos for the plaques...Gene East seems to post daily keeping people informed...
11. I'm having 1,000 color posters made with the same design as the T-Shirts, hope you get some of them signed by famous drivers...As I know Jim McKean, Bill Seelbod, Fred Hauenstein, .....to name a few...will be there...
As noted on the registration form, I'm dedicated to supporting charity organizations, Boat Racers Assistance Fund, and Boat Racing.... If I was trying to make money.....I think I'd go into painting houses....my Old Man always made lots of money and he painted houses....
Hey JOHN SCHUBERT...I went to see Jersey Boys last night....I told the Bellflower Chick, "Hell, Jersey Boys ain't new to me...I've had friends from Jersey for 50 years...." I really enjoyed the show though...
AND THANKS: Not just from me...Thanks from everyone one who'll be at the DePue Reunion...
This is GOING TO BE FUN!!!!

Things are starting to pick up. Looking forward to John's next report. Ron...you must have been reading my mind. I will be needing some medium T Shirts and maybe small for Alexis and Andrew, but I told Joe I needed a triple X or four X if that was available. He asked why. And I told him I was going to do what Denise did at the Lone Star Reunion. I was going to get one big enough to get as many autographs on it as I could.:D

Charley,
I had talked to Hoz I believe last year at Depue or maybe the Stock winter nationals in Ocoee a year & a half ago & he definitely said he would like to be at the reunion. However, I don't know if he hangs out here so may not know all the details. Can you contact him? He still is in Lake Placid, & still in construction of I think commercial buildings if not homes. I had his card but can't find it now.

Wayne,
I told Ron we needed a lot more medium shirts so I went & ordered more from Ann, as well as more Lg, XL & 2XL. Do you feel we should order some Small's for children & smaller ladies? I can still do that as Ann was on her way I believe to Elizabeth City Friday for the races this weekend & wouldn't get the order ready to go until she got home.

Just learned that Art Neadeck will be in Depue on Thursday about noon, depending on how early Dick Pond gets to his house. You know, it will be great with Dick there, too bad Billy won’t be. Art has the restored “Ring of Fire”, & both could be perfect for photo sessions, and greater yet if Marshall Grant, owner of the Ring of Fire shows!!!!!!!!

John...I am so far out of the loop now (well I never was in the loop either) about what people like to wear that don't look at my opinion with much weight. What I see is kids wear more baggy clothes and Andrew tells me not to tuck my T shirt in. They let them hang out and do not like a tight fit. So I would think medium would be the lowest size for a big order with maybe some small held out. I don't know how the orders are packaged but it seems like nowadays there's not that many smalls. But maybe it's because they go first.;) :D

My kids say, "Dad would you untuck your shirt?" Huh? I say? Untuck my shirt???
If anyone noticed we had said four free drinks, with pre registration, John (Schubert) tells me beers are no longer ten cents in DePue....So, only two free drinks...
Hell, I wonder how much corn is going to cost??? (Note to John Riner Woods: Be sure to chew that corn well)...

I've read through about as much of this DePue thing as I could stand and could not find a date for this extravaganza. Of course I could call Ron, but if I can't find it, maybe there's at least one other person who can't either.
Maybe a MapQuest and hotel motel recommendations would also be nice. I'd even like to see a list of those who have registered thus far. (Broc??)
I'll wear my shirt tail where ever I damn well please but I will chew my corn well.

I think I might have been about 11 or 12. We went to Lake Saguaro for a race...I spelt most of the way...When we got there, about 2 A.M. Clarence Roberts, from Winslow, AZ had steaks on the Bar-B-Que...He forced me to eat a steak at 2 A.M. For whatever reason, I still recall that as being one of the best steaks I ever ate...
Seems, I was with my brother, John Drake, and my brother's girls friend, who was called Paining Pennarelli (Her real name was Betty Pennarelli...and she raced A Stock Hydro and had been to this same lake, with my brother for the filming of Bernadine starring Pat Boone....).
Seems I had a GREAT time, as I look back, I always had a great time in Arizona...college days...racing the river......Anyway, Deanie Montgomery, as I recall, was really fast...I didn't meet him...but 52 years later, I am anxious to meet Deanie Montgomery...seems he was the HERO of the day...at least to me...
ADD; Actually, it was Canyon Lake.....Well, maybe it wasn't...I know It was Lake Carl Pleasant...

Add Karen Cadle to the list. She is Ross Gibson's granddaughter and Bill Collins step-daughter. She is a very attractive lady; the spitting image of her mother.
Like most pit kids, even if they didn't race; she took a ride on occasion.
She tells me one of her most memorable experiences was taking a test ride in C-Service Runabout at the age of 17. She pulled into the pits, jumped out of the boat, took off her lifejacket and her swimsuit top came off as well.
She received a standing ovation from the guys in the pits.
I wasn't there. Damn the bad luck!
I knew I shouldn't have quit racing when I did.
Talked to Henry III this morning and let him know he had a seat with me going north on the 24th if he had time. He is a busy man these days and I hope he can make time to join all of us at Depue. He's always been a good friend and it will be fun to do a road trip with him again.............

Even if you could squeeze your 3 scrawny asses into "OLD BLUE", under the old F Runabout rules: you'd still need to add 50# of lead to be legal.
Git-r-dun and I'll pull the rope!
If we mount a pedestal seat on the front deck, one of us can be trolling for "Wisconsin Perch" while we run around the lake..............OK, so FAST trolling.
Thanks for the offer to rope us, Gene. That will guarantee us an extra 1 or 2 mph just with you in our pits.

This is kind of a reminder to those that plan to attend the reunion to pre-register to guarantee a printed name badge, a shirt, two drink tickets & free pass for food which will be hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, roasted corn chips & all the stuff you put on those things. Also, our Key note speaker is Charley Strang. Those of us that witnessed/heard him at the Depue banquets can attest to his knowledge & wit about all who competed in those days.
If you are a current racer but still eligible for the reunion, in order to obtain the above goodies, please register for if you decide to do it at Depue, per Ron Hill's post, there will be a $15 late fee.
Current racers that would like to just mix in with the reunion attendees are also invited. You can pre-register like everyone else, or donate to the food jar (or whatever way we decide to collect for food other then pre-register), buy a T-shirt in the tent & participate in the silent auction.
There will be a large poster showing all the reunion pre-registered attendees. This way you will know who will be there & you can look for them & talk of course about racing.
And, one further comment, Marshall Grant will be in attendance. For those who might not know, Marshall was the bass guitar player in Johnny Cash's band and prominently known as the Tennessee 3. Marshall loved Alky race boats and campaigned them for many years with boats named "Boat named Sue", "Ting of Fire", "Ring of Fire Jr.", & I believe "Miss Folsom". Marshall also built with Dieter Konig the first 8 cylinder Konig. This very engine will be at the reunion as it is currently owned by a friend of mine. Also, Art Neadeck from Quincy, Illinois has restored a Desilva runabout just like the Ring of Fire. Marshall's drivers of that boat, Dickie Pond, Billy Seebold & I believe Dan Kirts will all be there. WHAT A PHOTO THAT WILL BE. Marshall, Dickie, Billy, Dan & of course the Ring of Fire.

Tim's son Ryan is a mechanical engineering student at Michigan not too many hours from DePue. Ryan was too little to remember the racing and I think his excitement at seeing what Tim used to do helped get Tim all hyped up.

Mark,
Cliff Kaus had two sons, Dale and I believe Darren. Both sons raced. That is Dale with his Dad in the photo. They all lived in Wisconsin... small town near Madison I believe. Their lead Pit Crew Boss is a small legened himself, Mr. Gene Kolowski or Kozlowski (sp). I guarantee where ever Gene and Dale were, it was definitely a party and they were great competitors as well. Dale held his own for years in the B & C hydro classes. Just plain good folks. I know that Gene passed away several years ago. I'm not sure about Dale. I would love to know though. :)

I couldn't remember if I posted this before or not, but its been something I've been thinking about for awhile. I'm in need of a Konig lower unit for my motor. It doesn't need any guts or drive shaft, just the housing, oil plugs, prop shaft and nut. It's for display only. So if anybody has a gutted one they were going to toss, or one that needs rebuilding at a cheap price I am interested. It would be cool to come back from DePue with one. Then the only thing I will lack is pipes, but since they stick out too far, I don't think I will need any. I'll just get some nice looking plugs for the elbow. Found a welder that will make a nice aluminum bracket to hang it on the wall.

Jeff,
Sorry you won't be at DePue, but please accept my gratitude for your work with the Boy Scouts.
I know the value of the scouting program. Quincy Welding sponsored an Explorer post. Mark Hummelsheim and I were the advisors.
My son Darin earned the Eagle while in scouting.
Giving up the biggest thing in the history of boat racing to make a better world for kids through Scouting is truely an admirable thing.
My hat is off to you.

Just got home at 6 am this morning from Constantine. We dropped the trailer off at Depue on the way home. Seems like dropping off the trailer on Sunday night is the thing to do now. I am so glad we are back on the shoreline. We leave tomorrow night. See everybody Wednesday morning. Cant wait. Oh by the way, we had beautiful weather at Constantine and great racing. We hope for the same this weekend.

Got an e-mail yesterday from Alan Ishii. He's looking forward to being in DePue Friday, but dreading the flight from L.A. to Chicago.
He says his willingness to get on an airplane shows how important it is for him to be at the reunion.
I find it interesting that a guy with "BALLS" as big as Alan has; and the hundreds of low level flights he has made, is concerned about flying at 35,000 feet.
Don't worry Alan, when you get to DePue; there will be plenty of friends there to relieve your anxiety with some of Mr. Busch's finest St. Louis products and Charley is bringing all of us a piece of tail. Alligator that is.
See you Friday!

I am sorry to say I won't be able to be there. I talked to RC Hawie this morning and he said he will be there and to add him to the list.

Got an e-mail from Dick Austin this morning confirming he is coming & bringing a trailer full of 4 cabover F-Hydros.
He only had time to get 3 motors together, but what memories those boats will bring with them.
Sure would be great if we could see and hear just one of them run!

Talked to John Dortch this morning. He indicated that he will not be able to attend due to Liz's health.
He sends his greetings and best wishes to all his friends. He wants so much to be there with us.
Johnny and Liz have been married for over 67 years and some things are far more important than boat racing. My words, not his, but the only thing I can think of that John Dortch loves more than boat racing, is Liz Dortch and their family!
Please remember these two icons of our sport in your prayers
We still expect "Little John" to be there representing the Dortch Clan.
By now some of the BDOBR are already at DePue, I'll be there Friday morning.
Have a safe trip everyone!
Can't wait to see everyone!

I just got off work and I'm leaving for DePue within the hour.
I had a pleasent phone conversation with Kay Pond just moments ago.
Kay is Dick's wife. Both have been married previously and Kay has grown children from her prior marriage.
Somehow the subject of Texans always putting an "S" on the end of Dick's name and calling him Dickie Ponds came up.
Kay told of her son being on a business trip to Texas several years ago and his contact in Texas asked where he was from.
When he replied Keokuk, IA the Texan said, "I've only heard of one other person being from Keokuk; that was a boat racer named Dickie Ponds".
I would loved to have seen the look on that Texan's face when Kay's son said,"Pardner, you ain't gonna believe this".
Small world we live in!
See you guys in the morning.
