Ron,

What are your plans for the Virtual Museum? If you have discussed them elsewhere on the board, please direct me to it. Since I collect 30's/40's Outboard Racers - OMC mostly, I have quite a few examples of racing props from the 20's thru the 40's that I would be glad to photograph and share. I am not an expert and never raced boats, but my thing is to run the old stuff and if you check out my website you can see some of them.

Don ands others...

I visited the Duck Decoy Museum in Harvre D'Grace, Maryland a few years ago. I'm not a hunter, never was, probably never will be, but I very much enjoyed the museum, as they covered Duck Decoys from the beginning to modern day decoys...It was just interesting as hell, may seen DUMB, but it was Cool, cool, cool!

I have dreamed of a Propeller Museum for many years, but really, finding a building that I could afford to allow to sit full of propellers, staff this museum, is really out of my financial reach.

Plus, I decided if I had this Museum in Needles, how many people could visit it, if they wanted to, anyway???

So, what I've decide, is to have an On Line Propeller Museum. I will post pictures of props I've saved, and tell what I know about them. I get props in my hands all the time, that bring back amazing memories.

So, if you have any prop, post pictures here on the Virtual Propeller Museum.....

If you want to do a museum, all kinds of evolution and hostory comes to my mind. For example, while many of the gurus are still alive, Hill, Hendrich, Dewald, etc, interviews. The history of the Michigan Wheel company, etc etc. They don't need to diclose their secrets, just what took them to where they are....Ever try to buy a prop? No one will ever sell you a prop that works, nor will they tell you where to get a prop that works for them.....

Do a documentary on how various metals and propellers evolved...Then the evolution of saftey gear after boating accidents and injuries from propellers...I have a few stories like that myself...

Ron--is this the place? Or is there another thread in the museum for the pics? Here goes.

These are my first props. I think they are both Michigan, but the old Z shaped one may be Kamic?? I took a photograpy class in the fall of my Junior year in high school and these were subjects for an assignment on close ups. We ran them on a KG7 Mercury alky deflector on a 9 foot something Mishey hydro.

I think both props are EARLY KAMICS. I don't have tike to take "RAKE" right now but wanted to post these pictures with lines drawn on them, so I can talk "Rake".

Years ago I had no idea how to describe rake to an ordinary boater ... one day I smashed over the threads on a piece of allthread threaded rod and I realized the common explantion was right there in front of me. I knew the nut would no longer work even though I had not changed the pitch of the rod ... what I had changed was the rake.

Normal nuts and bolts have zero rake. Because of this, the nut can be put on either way. When I bent the threads on my allthread I did not change the pitch of the threads on the rod ... but I did change the rake. If all the threads were bent over the same way and I had a special nut that had the thread thru it with the same rake and pitch it would work ... but only one way. A regular zero rake nut would not go on the special rod; nor would my special raked nut go on a regular rod - dispite the fact that all had the same pitch :)

Great example of RAKE, Sam. I'll get "IN TO" this a little more, SOMEDAY, but wanted to post a picture of my 1960 DU wheel. Note the Rake Line differs from early Kamics...

There is a reason to post this Crown Royal bag in the virtual propeller museum. Some of you members know why. Who will be the first to let the others know?

Wayne,I only have a hand full of props, but they all are wraped in Crown Royal bags LOL! .....That's all I use them for. Is there another reason....?

Master Oil Racing Team

That's exactly the reason. I didn't know you did, but it may be more of a common practice than I thought. Now to the other part of this historical question. What famous racer did the same besides you Jeff?

Jeff Akers
02-09-2008, 08:50 PM
Yeah, I think it may be pretty common practice. I learned it from a very good friend up in region 10... as for the famous guy............?

Then all the more reason for this prop tote bag to be included in the museum.;):D

I used to keep all my props in those bags too!

I keep Crowne Royale in mine.

I see some keen business possibilities developing here. With Ted's contacts there is a definite business expense. As a West Coast prop building entreprenuer, Ron is open to recycling as a teammate in California's green goals. What can be better than Ron start using these Deep Purple bags to slip props in for delivery.;)

I've been in the buying and selling business for years...Never made much money..But I buy full whiskey bottles and sell the empties...

I guess we could start having a purple bag with each of my E-Bay props....

Over the years, I've had hundreds of propellers sent to me, in these purple bags...I never really drank that stuff, so I figured that people just bought it to get prop bags...

Old Nick Buellel, must have had about 25 prop bags...Nick and Tom Ige used to race 350 hydro and I could LEGALLY run a D stock against them...or maybe I couldn't run legally but they needed the boats for points, then we'd bet $5.00 on who would win...Made 10 bucks every race....

Since it was such a popular tote for props, I guess there was no way anyone could pick the right answer. I was just a young impressionable kid when I saw that Jerry Waldman used those bags for his props. In those days, all we had to put beer in was a paper sack.:D

Wayne,

we used one to keep our Keller speedo in. Nice and soft so the lens would'nt get scratched.

I was teaching my son Joey about prop designs tonight and showing him how they changed over the years. Our Crown Royal bags were digested by moths years ago but we did find my best ASR wheel hiding in the mix of props. I ran this prop on an A Austin runabout and it was the best ASR wheel I had. I bought this prop used at the Canadian Nationals when I was around 12 years old with the prize money I won in ASH. Joey was comparing it to my 2008 props when he found some strange markings on the hub. (I still have the Austin too)

I wasn't sure where to post this pic, but the prop was too big too hang on the wall.;):D

I went to the Corpus Christi International Boat Show to find some good prop pics for Ron's birthday, and for him to hang in his virtual propeller museum. It actually turned out to be a big surprise to myself. More to follow.

Wayne,

I came across this thread by chance. I thought it was about a general boat racing museum rather than a prop museum.

Like you, I remember Gerry Waldman as being the one who first popularized the practice of storing props in the velvet Crown Royal bags.

Crown Royal became known as "Boat Racing Whiskey" around Quincy.

I don't drink whiskey, but I did have people save the bags for us and some of our favorite props were kept in Crown Royal bags.

The run of the mill props were mounted on a board in the big yellow trailer.
