DUPUE INAUGURAL BOAT RACERS REUNION 2007
Available at the reunion!!!! Over 450 vintage and current boat racing photos put together on one DVD. There photos were originally taken by Wayne Baldwin, Joe Rome, Paul Simison and others. Background music consists of the music by “The Tennessee Three, The Sound Behind Johnny Cash.” This album consists of instrumentals of the songs made famous by Johnny Cash and his band. Johnny’s band members were Fluke Holland, Bob Wooten and Marshall Grant. Marshall, as you all know, had a great impact on boat racing. This DVD will bring back lots of memories.
All of the proceeds from the sale of this DVD will go to the US Title Series. The cost will be a bargain at $10.00 each. The first ten pictures are worth that and the rest are free!!!!!

That's way cool Joe. I wish we had something like that back in our day, but at least some of those old photos can have a positive impact on todays racing. The U S Title Series is along the lines that my Dad, Tim Butts, Marshall Grant, Jerry Waldman and you were working for. The series has been a striking success and I am looking forward to the races. I am glad of the vision of those that put the series together and kept it going all these years. It is a great thing what you are doing.
I can't wait to see those first ten photos.;) :D
What a great thing you have done Joe...............I can't wait to get one. With the response I think you are going to have, I hope you bring enough. See you in Depue.

Don't these two guys look like linebackers? Just a couple of the pics that are on the DVD. Wayne Baldwin and Paul Bogosian are the two ruff looking characters here. They were tuff customers to deal with in a race boat.:D

I think you took that picture of Pauly between heats of F Runabout. He was pouring the fuel and I was holding the funnel and I was shaking so bad I couldn't keep the funnel over the fuel tank. He says: "Get somebody else!" The first heat was bad, the second heat was worse. I thought: If I just grab my knees, bounce up and I'm outta here". Take note Charley Bradley at Depue we have three heats and I'm going to be the guy in the front of the cockpit; and you get to hold the funnel.

I always liked that picture of Pauly. Its the intensity of his eyes. He knows where he is going...he is committed....and nothing more needs to be said.
Now as far as what you said about F Runabout Tim...that look alone could convey what you said without words.;) But Pauly is a very thoughtful person. I would say to you........you had seen him drive before Tim. What in the world (besides editor of Hydroplane Quarterly) would make you want to ride deck for Paul Bogosian?
Pauly is the Midwestern version of Charlie Bailey.:D
I will be looking forward to taking pics of you and Charley Bradley.:D

Joe likened the photos of Wayne and Paul to a pair of linebackers.
True; both are tough looking serious individuals and on a race course, I'd rate them even.
However, on the football field, my money is on Pauly.
Sorry about that Wayne!
See you guys in 2 weeks!

No need to apologize Gene. My money would be on Pauly too. The only way I could escape being squashed was if I could outrun him.;)
BTW Denny Henderson told Joe I was chicken if I didn't respond to him calling me out. He wants a rematch of the 1974 rock skipping contest at DePue. I can't remember if it was a draw or I beat him. I do know HE didn't win. So I'm ready Denny, but I haven't heard from your trainer Dirty Jim in years, so I hope you will be in shape.:D

Let me tell a Bogosian story. Three punks broke into his garage and Pauly caught them outside in his yard. The first said: "See this knife!". Pauly had a wrench in his right hand and said: "See this wrench!", and hit him with a left and knocked him out cold. Then he dropped the wrench and turned to the next guy and gave him a one-two and knocked him out cold too. The third guy went over the six foot fence and tried to run away down the alley. Pauly went over the fence and picked the guy up over his head and threw him over the fence back into his yard.
When the arresting officer and the paramedics arrived at the hospital the cop on duty asked what happened. They said that these three guys broke into Bogosian's garage. The cop on duty said: "I bet Pauly hasn't got a scratch on him."
The reason I rode with Pauly is because he told me I was riding with him.

Yeah, I'm calling you out Baldwin. It's time we settled this once and for all. My only request is that we do it early enough in the week so my dislocated shoulder can get well enough to race on Sunday. O.K.?

After years of losing to Denny on the race course, I thought I would challenge him to golf. I figured that since I play a good bit that I could at least woop him on the golf course. So a few years ago, we started playing the Monday after Constantine at local course in the Depue area.
First timeout, Denny tells me there is nothing that he more passionate about than golf!! Oh crap, he is more into golf than racing his boat??? Well, last year we go out with a runabout guy, Fuschlin or something like that. Denny begins birdie, birdie (one chip in and one 60 foot putt). Needless to say, I never caught-up. This year, I am bringing my own equipment to the course and we will see if I can atleast keep-up with him. If anyone is interested in joining, let us know
IT's been great to race with such a fine group of friends for such a long time. Some I rarely beat, but it doesn't matter so much when a friend gets the better of you. I told Chris Hellsten ayear ago that I finally beat him!! Unfortunately, it was because I turned 40 before he did.

If I had my left handed 6 iron I might consider it David. I heard Denny was quite the golfer.
Here's a couple of pics of that rock skipping contest. Denny was sandbagging as he knocked off Benny Aylor and Craig Lawrence in the qualifying heat. The second pic shows his true style as he was able to get somewhere around 20 skips or so before the rock would skid to a halt.
I think the biggest problem we had was the judges couldn't see good enough to count the last 5 or 6 skips before the rock started planing to a stop.
Hey Denny--I don't think Joe Rome should be a judge this time. To prove his impartiality he has been known to throw me out.;) :D

Joe...here is a question I have and probably others want to know as well. Since your DVD is not a part of the silent auction, or part of the Reunion package, where will we have to go to buy it? Since the proceeds are to go directly to the US Title Series I didn't know if we need to go to registration, or the big reunion tent, or or you going to walk around with a backpack and money belt?;) :D

Joe,
You will also be able top sell a certain number to the local populace. The fans at DePue are very well educated about the Alky division and many have come to the races for overf 20 years or longer. The USTS and the Men's club will have some other goodies available also.

My wife being chief scorer handles the entry fee money so I feel it appropriate that I should handle the other monies. TRUST ME!
REALLY tho when you get to De Pue just look up Shirley or Bev Krier[they will most likely be in the registration trailer] and they will have a way to handle it.

The good news is that Andrew was rushed to the hospital to get that appendix out that gave us a false start several months back. The bad news is that between that and all the DV Tools I have had to run....plus the stupid computer....and the other stupid computer....and the one I am always posting on now have contributed to me not being able to do my DVD. I'm not giving up until the last minute, but it doesn't look good at this point.
But the other good news is that I was able to get a DVD copy of a short film clip with sound that my sister Jan put together on the 1977 UIM OD World Championships at Dayton. It has sound, and it is authentic. I don't like the way it was put together, but the place I had this transferred from 16mm to DVD said he would work with me to transfer the whole thing and edit it like I want. That's for the future. Until then..........there will be a cool 5 minute or so of DVD from Dayton 1977.

I set up the media projector just to be sure that the DVD, my Lap top & media projector would work. After a couple of DQ starts, I got it to project well. All I can say is WOW & serious Kudus to Joe Rome. Furthermore, almost everyone that has registered that raced in the 70's & 80's are on the DVD. Voss, Gohery, Hooghkirk, Scopinich & George Andrews, rest in peace, Denny Henderson, Craig Lawrence, Tim Butts, Andy Anderson, Fucshlin, Kay Harrison, Hoz Compton, geez, I'm getting tired, but we are all there. Bet you can't wait to see it & purchase your own copy. Henry Shakeshaft III, Malcolm Harden, Hal Tolford, Henry Wagner, Tom, Jerry & Dan Kirts, Marshall Grant, Billy & Grandpa Seebold, Rex Hall, the Van Steenwyks, and more.
The background music is the Tennessee Three, Johnny Cash's band with all the familiar songs. When the pictures appear of the famous Ring of Fire, yup, guess what music plays.
I'm excited.

I did ask Joe if there was going to be enough room for Wayne. He wants to make sure he doesn't forget a thing. Wayne, we might have to tie you to the top. Joe can run some speaker wire to you so you can hear the Johnny Cash CD's all the way to Depue!!!
We went to Fry's to get the screen. He wanted the largest one they had.....8 feet across!!!! I told him it would not fit. He said, yeh, there it will. I told him that the 6 foot screen was large enough. Sure enough, when we got to the truck, he saw that the larger one would not fit. Just like a man.....thinking things are really larger they actually are.:D

As far as the rest goes Karen....I guess men always look at the big picture.:D It's a strategic thing.;)

Great John. The one thing I have been dreading is requests for prints. I have been going strong the last few days making prints to get autographed and I know a bunch of people are going to want copies. I just don't have time now, or when I get back either. So if I have any photo paper left, I will bring it and if anyone wants to scan something themselves, they are welcome. What about ink? You might be overwhelmed. I am not charging anything if anybody wants to copy my stuff, but I don't think it should cost us a bunch to supply these services either. So maybe a few people out there that may want to copy some stuff should bring regular paper and maybe photo paper PLUS ink. Why don't you post what copier/scanner/printer you have so maybe some that may want to scan some things will know what ink cartridges to buy. That is, unless you were planning to cover it yourself.:)

Since Wayne posted one of me and Marshall, I am returning the favor and posting one of him and Marshall. Marshall called me the day after I got home from the reunion wanting to know what happened. He really wanted to go but couldn't. Marshall was remembering the time Dick flew out of his boat into the water (in Midland, Michigan when he was trying to set a straight away record). Dick was out in the water and was calling to Marshall to come and get him because he had lost all of clothes when he hit the water. Good thing that Dick and Marshall wore the same size. :D

Howard Anderson and I bet a flag on who would win the most championships, Texas or Washington. I won, so I got a flag autographed by all the Washington drivers back 30 years ago. Howard's Texas flag that he won from me about the same time, got destroyed in a fire in his motor home. I brought my flag to Depue to give back to him. He is going to hang it in the Seattle Outboard Club.

Joe didn't mention it, but the Washington flag has all the autographs from the Region 12 guys that were there. The flags that Howard lost in the fire had the Region 15 drivers autographs. That was the deal. All the drivers that lost in the points competition sign the flag that goes to the victor. It was a fun rivalry.

My sense of what occurred this weekene was trully historic in not only the racing, but the great fun had with the reunion.
I sat in a chair in the back of the room and just watched the conversations the antics, and the hugs and love that was shared. I trully was in awe as I sat there and thought about the number of former and current drivers there and enjoying themselves. I can not begin to tell you how much I enjoyed my time with all of you.
Seeing John Woods again was awsome. I grew up in Depue after my Dad died and we lived with my Grand Parents. John showed up with a huge trailer of boats and as a kid in Depue, your hope was to "help" a driver. John and his crew put up with me for the whole weekend. They were parked directly accross the street from the VFW up on the road, as the water was up to what is now the fence along the main straight in the park. The left overs of a hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast came north and hit the midwest with a slug of water and the water rose extremely fast and high, with everyone scrambling trying to get stuff off the beach. So we were left to lug those motors and boats up and down the steps. Would not trade the expirence for anything.
Having Alan Ishii come back and stay with me at Depue was wonderful I can still remember his win in the "A" runabout at Depue and the celebration that we had. Doc, Jim Mckean, and the rest of us were having great fun.
I am thrilled after all these years to be still involved and now get to announce the Title Series and help to keep alive what you guys continued from the generations before you started. Boat racing is the best, not the racing, although it is a close second, but the friendships that we have developed and continue to this day.
My thanks to Wayne, Joe, John, Gene, Ron for a well done, more fun, and best party in a long long time.

It was truly incredible Ray. My Thanks to John Schubert for a job well done. I have served in different capacities besides racing during my past boat racing days, but never in registration. John had all the preregistered packets in alphabetical order with instructions, name tag and T shirt with correct size inside. And there was a checkoff list detailing all that was supposed to be done. Great Job John. The name tags were done professionally and big enough to read. While John handled most of the registrations, Joe and I helped some. It was so well organized John didn't even have to explain how to do it.
And thanks to Charley Bradley who happened by shortly after Joe was trying to teach me how to fold T shirts. We had about 8 piles that were taken out of the boxes and needed to be folded. Joe rejected my first three attempts and was showing me the right way. He wouldn't let me take a picture of him doing it for fear his wife Karen might see the pic. Then Charley showed up. He jumped right in began folding shirts in mere seconds. I believe he must have at one time been in the Navy doing laundrey duty.;) :D . He did four big stacks to my one little stack.

The 20-H with the Jones-O'Dea block was so amazing to me. I had heard about that O'Dea block for years, but never saw one. At the top of a roller coaster, in Chicago at the Bobs, I heard my dad and Jack Maypoles discussing "Cast Iron" Mercury blocks...that was 1956,
Thanks, John Schubert fro bring this O'dea-Jone 20-H for display. Of course, the ORANGE MOTOR is NOT a Fred's Cafe engine, it is a Cresent...Imported by Dick O'Dea. It was an Arimedes Penta...Volvo bought Cresent out and discontinued the two storke motor...besides, the Konig was faster...but the Cresent was a sweet running piece..as I won the 1974 Super C Runabout Nationals using Reed Riddle's Cresent...in Dayton, Ohio!

Wayne the pictures are great, but this party was on Wed.
It is the annual drivers party hosted by the West Coast teams. They do a tremendous job, marinating and transporting all that meat from the coast to DePue. Oh and then they do all the cooking also. The concoction is a mudslide and Steve and Connie have been doing them for a long time. Steve fashioned the blender cause he doesn't always have electricity available. When Sam used to come from the West Coast, there were mudslide duels as Sam brought a commercial blender (very big) instead of clothes in his suitcase. Used to take several samplings before a winner could be declared. Great pictures, keep em coming.

That sure doesn't surprise me. Joe and I closed down every place we were and were back up at 6:00 am every morning. Things kind of ran together. All I can say about that week was "It was a great run!"
I did manage to get down to the pits a couple of times before racing started. I wanted to talk to Rich and get a photo of him signed, but he was always busy. Next time I guess.
Here are a few pit shots (day ??? Wed morning I think) Bill Hosler was back in a boat after many years. Here are a couple of Ralph Donald and his wife Janet shoving him off.

1. Karl Williams and Joe Rome
2. Ron Hill and Bob Wartinger swapping stories.
3. Ron and Pete Nydahl relaxing
4. Fred Hauenstein arrived with Jerry Waldman's D hydro. Joe could not believe how easily Fred scampered up to untie the Marchetti. Joe told me flatly.."If someone put 10,000 dollars in that cockpit that I could pick up and walk away with if I could climb up and get it....that money would still be there." He told me he couldn't believe how effortlessly Fred jumped up there.
