Just to fill you in on some Australian Racing.
The E C Griffith Cup, our premier event, was first run in 1912. It is an Australasian (Australia and New Zealand) Championship for Unlimited Open Inboards.
Our definition of unlimited Open is, and hull configuration Hydro, Displacement, but not Hydrofoils (sorry Tom), with any inboard motor, driving a propellor. So its basiclly "all in"
The first race was won by a boat called Kangaroo, a step hydro, with some kind of french motor. This boat aslo won the Griffth Shield presented in 1909 3 times in a row, and got to keep it, So Ernest Griffith donated another.
Except for the war years it has only missed a few years of not being contested for one reason or another. The race is held on the water of the previous year winners club. It resided in New Zealand for some time in the late 1950's and early 60's, before returning to Australia. It has gone back and forth a few times since.
It has been won by displacememnt type hulls a few times over the years. The GP's have won it the last few years, but the displacement hulls give them a run for their money. If anyone is interested I can clip out a lap or two from a video and stick it up somewhere for you to download and view from the comfort of your own computer.
