Hey All,
I am rigging my Ben Hur for Bill Keegan to run at LS next weekend with a 44CI engine D Classic Hydro in Canada. Bill use to run Ben Hurs with a 40 pipe motor but cannot seem to recall any set-up. Anyone have any ideas on where to start as for height and tuck. 7 x 11.5 - 11 .75 prop 140 lbs boat 200lbs driver.
Thanks,
Tim Chance

I don't know if you can tell anything from this photo of Floyd Wilson from the early 1960's.

Long ago when I was looking for a build I was considering a Ben Hur but chose the Airborn. From the looks of the photo from Tim Id say it might not be tucked, rather parallel or even out a tad. [by eyeball anyway]

I have been wondering what u were going to do with that rig. My D Jones is a similar hull, and from what i have been told[free advice, and worth only that] is that u must 1st decide to either run it as a 'tail-dragger', or a true 'cab-over'. With a 40" closed up motor, set 2" deep , tucked way in, 150# driver[not me:eek: ] we will prop ride with the rear floating about 2" clear . Best set up for me is no tuck, 3/4" deep, and stay way up front, as it packs a lot of air, but is a nice ride. 'They' say they always raced as tail draggers, but ran kilos as true 2pt hydros.
All the above, only my two cents worth.;)

I have been e-mailing Steve Wilson, son of Floyd Wilson about the Ben Hur and he talked on the phone to Stan Doseth and Stan remembers he would put a straightedge on the bottom and raise the motor up so about 1/4 of the blade of the propeller was above the bottom of the boat. It was a cleaver and would have been 2-blade. He doesn't remember any kick-out. Three photos, two of Floyd and Stan, one of Floyd alone.
The Ben Hur pretty much dominated the D Alky class in Midwest Power Boat Association back in the late fo's, early 60's; until the first Sid Craft showed up.
