3 cylinder OMC motors

Would like to run a 56ci motor on 49.7ci style lower, ie 4 spline driveshaft.
Is it possible to put a 49.7ci crank in a 56ci motor and is it a direct drop in?
Also, assume I will have to use the 56ci adapter plate on the 49.7 mid, correct?
