Since I'm now a Looper custodian, I'm thinking I can hide a modern ignition system in the boat (hey, I want to go for a ride, not just look at it) and I see the the MSD 5900 has an input for points. Is this the best option or is there something better?

Thanks
Dave

Copied a picture of this ignition that is built for the Merc's. Can't recall who offers them. Maybe someone can chime in with info. They use Huskivarna (sp) coils.

Thanks Tom, I'm trying to keep a stock look with the points and hiding the MSD boxes somewhere in the boat. I'm thinking a better/hotter ignition system will better my chances of not coming home on the string. I think I have a couple of similar coils and a flywheel from an experiment we were running on a 125 in the pre Rossi/VRP days

Davey,

I bet that Pop had some of the CD ignitions from the FA Konigs in his collection of "stuff". If I recall, the put the CD ignition in the back of the boat and the wires ran up to the engine.

On the other hand, some things are better seen rather than heard!:D

David,
I think you're right, I'll check in the junk, err, I mean stuff.

Since I (we?) were weaned on those things, I (we?) can't hear them very good anyway.....:D

Well, we never had loopers, as dad got back into racing in 1969 and purchased a Konig. Dad still has his 1969 2-pipe FA. It has been years, but it should still run as we had it rebuilt and then never raced it again. I am not sure if we still have the pipes.

Depite never racing loopers, I cannot hear anyway!

That ignition pic that Tom posted is made & sold by Steve Roskowski

When I got my B Looper new in the late 60's it had point ignition. I think the points were Ford "Blue Streak" (whatever that means) and I had a 12 to 6 volt resistor but I can't remember what the coils were. I also drove for Ross Gibson and his Loopers had belt driven Mercury Thunderbolt Ignition. They both worked.

So, I would think that on the Looper that you are the caretaker of, just keep the points clean and gapped, the battery charged and there shouldn't be any problem.
