If ya turn the ring gear in the transaxle around, you can also use any Porsche 4 banger...Assuming you could find one at a right price....It's not hard to dump $1,500 in a good used working stock motor, Ron. Alot of the dune buggy crowd is moving toward Subaru Boxer and Chevy V-8 motors, but I was amazed at what that VW stuff escalated to.... Many guys I know running bug motors have $6-10K in a motor....That used to be a $200 item not too long ago..........
