I recently found a local club that races inboard hydros and Id like to join in on the fun. Im still waiting to hear back from them. But The smallest class they run is the 1 litre hydro, which is something id like to start off in since it is the slowest. I want to build my own hull from mostly wood but can 'glass it if necessary. Does anyone have info on where I can get some plans from to help my with the hull? And what type of motor do they run? Off the top of my head, the only 1.0 I can think of is the 3cyl geo motor. Im trying to get started here so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve

1 litre is a modified class... 1.5L stock is the entry level class. Big difference is work and knowledge required. You have to know your engines if you want to race 1L competitively.
1.5L you have only one engine choice... the bullet proof Toyota 4AC (Corolla motor).
I have a package for sale if it interests you... not far away, south side of Toronto. Would help with delivery.

Either way, glad to anwswer any questions you have about the 1.5L class. Or check out that forum where my boat is posted and ask away...

well as I said I would really prefer to get a good set of modern plans and build my own hull and set everything up myself. I figure that while I do that I will learn more about the setup and hopefully pilot it better.
Did you race that with marine prop riders?
Once I build the hull and power it with either a 1 or 1.5 litre motor, can I later go in a re-power it for maybe a 2.5 class? I do know more than my fare share about engines and have built quite a few. Are power adders such as turbo's or superchargers allowed? Id love to setup a turbo on one. I have a 2.0 dodge neon engine, DOHC with a better head and performance intake and exhaust with a few other goodies. Would I be allowed to run that motor?
Do you know of anyone or where I can check to get a set of plans for my own hull? Keep in mind that Ill be using mostly plywood. I understand that it mite be slower than the other guys, but id rather not kill myself. I like to build my skills before moving on to a faster setup. I just dont think I can go from my 40mph chris craft to a 100mph hydro without incident.
And what motor do you guys use for the 1 litre class? Im still curious

Sorry, I don't know anyone who has plans for an inboard. Most boats are made of panels or molded composites now.
I didn't make it to a MPR race... I also race outboards and the dates/time didn't work out. I raced a couple time in NY, ON and Quebec.
If you get the right size boat you can go from 1.5 to 1L to 2.5L... but you'd be giving up a little in each class is my understanding.
You should really read the APBA rules for inboard classes and motor before you even think of building anything... some classes are very limiting, other let you do lots... you might not like the classes you're talking about at all.

Most guys in 1L are using 2 stroke jet ski motors.

Misfit,
I would highly reccomend looking into the 2.5 stock class as a starter class. It is one of the largest classes running so you would be all most always have a full field of boats at most races. They run the 2.3 litre Pinto engines and run between 90-100 MPH top end speeds. The Engine could then easily be modified at a future time to run in the exciting and quick 2.5 litre modified class. Sorry turbo and superchargers are not allowed in this class but your dodge neon engine would work in this modified class with fuel injection. I would also reccomend contacting either Ron Jones Jr or Sr out of Seattle to see if they would draw up a set of plans for you. I am not sure but I think you can get their contact information on the APBA website. I applaude you for wanting to build your own boat, there is nothing better than going out in a homemade hull and blowing the doors off the competition. Good Luck and have fun!

Im trying to search on Ron Jones Jr or Sr, if anyone has a phone number or email, please let me know.
I finally found a possible number for him, but the site is from '97. Anyone know if this is the rite number? (206) 926-6862.

Steve, have you talked to the guys in your local club? There is lots of action right in your area and I'm sure they would be a huge pool of knowledge and could likely even get a test ride in something. I've met some of them as I did my cell test with MPR last winter. Getting advice from the teams you would be racing with sounds like the best advice to me. They know what classes are good in your area.

To talk directly to a large number of racers in that category, the best list to join would be inboardhydros.com on Yahoo groups.
http://groups.yahoo.com/subscribe/inboardhydros
It's a very active list and you'll get a lot of responses.
Good luck to you!

Im trying to get some more info out of the local guys, but I still cant find anyone who has some plans for a plywood hydro. Im taking your advice and going the smart way leaning toward a 2.5 running a 2300 motor. One thing that I never saw while reading the apba rules was anything about a blower. Some of the spec'ed engines came stock turbocharged. So can I run one? Or did I just miss it.

No turbo or blowers are allowed in the 2.5 stock, or 2.5 modified, class. I too strongly recommend that you join the yahoo inboard hydro group listed above. All the inboard hydro racers drop in there and thus there is a wealth of info and conatcts on the forum.
Good Luck!

Hmmm, don`t know why you're having a problem with the Yahoo setup, maybe some kinda e-mail spam blocker program at work.
Anyhow, here`s the contact info for the APBA. Surely someone there can get you pointed in the right direction.....I hope.

Make sure Yahoo is using your personal email address. Sometimes it assigns a "Yahoo.com" email address to you when you sign up on those boards. If so, then the message will be sent to your Yahoo mail box. Check your settings on the group signup page:

Its sweet, but too big. A 7 liter boat would prob kill me and I just dont have the room for it. Im leaning heavily toward a modern S class (2.5 stock) hydroplane. If anyone has a lead on a good hull in SE Mi, please let me know
