Tim thanks, will look into this.
JohnI just sent a message to Mrs. Barber and asked her to post all the info here because all I could find was payouts for the race.
I suppose I can make it:)
Also the Sport calender is wrong, Bryan will be a 3 class race 45,120, T-hull , as will Lubbock, the lubbock date will probably change again according to the info. I have been told.

Why not, my 5 year old daughter was cheering on Tiff all weekend and she beat me. I guess there is something to be said about that "girl power" thing:) I'm in. PN has THE BEST FOOD for sale compared to any site we run as well, can't pass that up!

Hey nice pic of Sydney and Tiff, I think Tiffany is a great role model (among many others) for any young (or old) person interested in our Sport. No matter what you don't see her throwing tantrums when she has a bad day ,,,,,,,unless she goes into the trailer first to do it?????:p:D:D:
Btw,,Tiff ,, your Rabbit is eating all of my shrubs in the yard, your going to have to come get it SOON;)

im not gunna ask about the rabbit but if i can get this tailight and hotel:p problem fix ill be there. does anyone know how to hook up trailer lights....

:D:D:D:D No comment;)
Russ, If you have a boat dealer or U-haul place close by they will probably do it for you,,,,for a fee,,,, or you may be able to find a premade harness for your vehicle at the auto parts store or Walmart that would just plug right in to your vehicles light harness ,,,,,easy no wiring/splicing , check that out first maybe
Oh ,, find out what kind of plug is on the trailer first ,,, flat,,,round??
ok i just got mny trailer harness to work. i bought mine from a jeep dealer. now i have no right turn signal. guess ill only take lefts... going to get a new light housing now to see if thats it. and uhaul could only do it the 23rd for 90 bucks. i did mine for 28.

Haha Yeah I keep my tantrums in the trailer... I cant let yall see me whining like a girl now! :)
By the way Doug-That rabbit is riding with me during the race so dont let it eat any more shrubs. I dont need that extra weight!
Oh and Ruben You arent kidding about the food! Im excited about the crawfish pies and fried cheesecake! Haha But that will have to wait until the races are over cause the whole weight thing ;)
OK ,,,,,but finding a helmet and a capsule suit to fit it might be a bit of a challenge.;)

Tim,
I know Jose Jr. is supposed to be there in the 120 so I don't know if he will bring the 45 too. Ara & Blair from Region 5 should chime in one way or the other soon.
I would think with this being a PTT race too that we will get between 10 - 15 boats for our class. If you look at this link at the PTT website, scroll down and see how many boats "usually" show up at a given PTT event. http://www.ptt-apba.com/Site/2007_Results.html
It should be a good turnout for the 45's.
Of course with Tiffany beatin all those guys at Highland, they may chicken out and no show. Haha.
See you guys in two weeks.

Less than 2 weeks to go Tim! Did you get the boat wet yesterday after the front blew through?
At least three 45 rookies coming to Pt. Neches (you, Dock, me) ...four if you count Steve as a rookie still....we'll have enough rookie boats to run our own class:D Who is running the #10?
Wonder if Russ made it home yesterday? Do we need to send a posse' out looking for him yet?
And the mystery continues: Will Tiffany's co-driver (rabbit) eat all of Doug's flowers and plants in Doug's yard before the race? Will the bunny find a capsule suit and helmet that fits in time to race?

Guys,
Don't be shocked if I show up on crutches. I kinda tore my knee up on Saturday. Yes, the bad leg to boot. Easy explanation......I guess I am just getting too old and walking is a challenge I cannot handle anymore.
I am on crutches right now just trying to let it heal up and keep the pressure off of it. I think it is just sprained. No popping or crunching so I think it will be alright once the swelling goes down.
I am pretty sure I will be there no matter what. I can walk, but like I said, I want it to have as much time to heal as possible.
See you guys in a couple days.

I tried to tell you guys I have the body of an 80 year old!!!
I actually was being chased by a Bear in the wilderness on a camping trip with my son, he caught me and I used my bionic leg to fend him off, but that sounded overly dramatic!!!
I have a backup driver if I cannot go. Although, something tells me I will just suck it up and give it a go.
Now the footrace afterwards, that is a different story.

An auto body friend of my dad used to use "gorilla snot" to glue moldings back on in the 70s and 80s. I think I saw some in the store the other day.

There were 13 45's. I cannot remember all their names either. I think Dan Orchard won the first 45 heat and Steve Merleau (rookie) won the second 45 heat.
I did ok. Could have done better, especially the second heat. I finished 7th both heats and should be starting 6th tomorrow. I'll do my best to improve on today's work.

Doug had some gremlins and also a new engine he was still breaking in so he didn't push it but I am sure he will chime in soon.
I am typing this from my blackberry. What a pain in the neck!
Oh yeah, John schubert and sport are 1st class!!!! What a great event!!! Lots of fans, a great venue, and the whole town came out.
Signing autographs for the kids was great. This event is what we need to do more of to grow the sport. About 75 percent of the kiddies I asked if they wanted to get in and drive one wanted to.
One kid renamed the trihull class. He called it the clown boats because of the bouncing, beating, and banging.
Later,
Steve.
what about nate....... any crashes? anyone take pics? how did ruben and tiffany do? Doug you should know that all you need is raid or if you have the budget gizmo to get rid of gremlins

I finished 4th, which was fine by me given the fact I was about 3 degrees away from landing on my head in qual.. Tiff I think finished 5th in the final but was hit for a lap penalty due to a lane violation at the start so not sure were she ended up. Safe weekend for all and smiles galore. I can honeslty say i believe PN is the #1 race on the ptt/sport series calander. There is more press, the kids were lined up 100 deep for autographs, 4 boat ramps, great food, pits are user friendly and John Schubert runs a fair/clean program. Forest Barber is a huge boat racing fan and is passionate about this race, and the results show! Can't wait for Orange.

Nate did well. He took it easy and got some seat time. He had a steering problem in Saturday practice but got that fixed.
Very little in the crash department. One tri-hull rolled over in turn one. A couple bumps and bangs here and there, but nothing to write home about. Very clean race all around.
I still don't know how Ruben pulled that thing back down. I was qualifying right after him and as I was pulling on to the course I looked down to turns 3 & 4 and saw him as close to upside down as possible without being upside down. I keyed in to the dock that he's over and did they want me to come back to the dock and then somehow Ruben got it back down. What a ride!
Note to self #1!!!!!!!Turn ignition switch back to the ON position after lining up for the main :o
Still trying to figure out how I qualified 6 th when the motor was not running as well as it should ,,,, and had such a tough time otherwise,.
Had numerous other issues which I think will remain unsaid:D

your just trying to lose arnt you:eek:
Just a oversight on my part,,,:o Switches not on,,,battery low or dead ,,,ect. Happens often . You just don't want it to happen to you and The start is just not the place to find out about it.
I was helping Mike Randolph this weekend,,,,,2nd or third 120 heat he lost fuel pressure. Foam in fuel cell had dissenagrated and clogged up fuel filter , lines ect. So if you have Foam ,,,,,,check or replace often;)
yep i got foam. do i even need it or can i do without?

It's been about 37 years since I have been to a boat race. Enven though I was only able to attend Saturday...Yes, I enjoyed all the activities. I would liked to have meet some of you but I was not allowed in the pit area. Wanted to take some pictures to get faces with boats. I didn't see any program or perhaps I missed the hand out. I know where I was located spectators had questions and wanted to know a little more about the boats/drivers. Sooooo, I filled the gaps for them, telling them you all where gun toting, tobacco chewing women chasing flagellate flowing bathless wonders of the great American racers society.:D And they believed it! I took a lot of pictures, most from one side of the course to the other so a lot are cropped. No special order, I hope they come out ok.

Did you get your prop back from Dinic? Glad to hear the event was a success, Dad says we won't miss next year!

Tony Terry drove the sh!t out of Schuberts boat in 120 and like I already said Hawkins got everything the old KAOS had to give him for 30 laps!
Ryan Simpson drove Devins boat and did a great job for his first time in a tunnel boat, he got faster every lap he raced.
Bill May had some issues getting off the dock but was a rocket when he got rollin and that OPTIMAX of Profit was so fast it was crazy to watch!! It was almost like he couldn't slow it down to make it turn!

got the prop as rob said,,,,thanks
thats racin,,,,,,,,,,
we fought electrical corrosion on the main battery wires at highlands
and batteries would not stay charged
and replaced them thinking that was the problem
guess the wiring cancer spread further,,,,,,,
it was hard to start on dock,,,,and no rpm,,,,,,,
but hey stayed running,,,,,,,,
so guess its way past time to replace the whole loom
if rollover circuit is corroded,,,,,then pump slows down and a trickle of ground goes to switchboxes
and i do agree on the pics,,,,,,awsome,,,,,,,,,,
if you make it to any other races,,,,
just ask security to let you speak to me or any driver
well get you in,,,,,,,,,guarenteed

David,
Thanks for the great photos...for a first race it was not too bad in the end. I love the picture of the boat pole in my hand. Had to circle back and return it to its' owner:D
Things I learned at the races:
* a sst45 drives a lot better WITH steering;)
* don't run over your sun awning with the trailer
* tighten the starter screws
* you have to stay on the outside as a rookie, but not in the south 40...
* write your name and boat number on your boat pole....they all look alike and disappear.
* there is not much in this life that is more fun than boat racing...even when you are 51 years old!I'm going to be needing help at the races....David, wanna come help?
* friends are priceless (seriously)
Nate

Next race for us is High Point.
Many thanks to John S. and his crew. They put on the best race around. 70 laps of fun and a very nice pay day.
I was the one who screwed up the start for Bill May and me. Rookie deal.(no excuse).trim stuck on me and I looked down to see the indicator and moved over on him. Many thanks to him for not running me over, it was deserved.
I think this was first heat race

John, did you replace the wiring after Highlands last year? if not that water would corrode most anything ;) Nate found a bad starter cable, looked good on the outside but the terminal broke off in his hands, corroded from the inside out, I had wiring issues at Highlands this year, rewired it and all seemed good at least for the wiring aspect at PN.

It was on the one lap qualifier, and yes whoever was holding the pole let go of THEIR end when I took off....before I closed the canopy and drove out on the course. I looked up and there it was hanging, so being a goofy rookie I circled back and dropped the pole off. Coulda, woulda, and shoulda was the theme for the day:D It was more fun than you can even imagine!
* Big thanks for everyone's patience with this rookie (there were 5 rookies in the 45 class )
* And another thank-you to John Shubert and the SPORT crew!
* another thing learned....'ya need a radio to communicate with the people on shore....

Now that pictures have been posted and everyone has had a chance to post I have a couple things to add.
First of all Nate did a great job this weekend in his first ever race! I had a good time racing with you even if your 10 mph faster than me when you get that dang thing pointed straight!:D
You 45 guys are great drivers, I got some seat time and tried to stay out of the way as best i could. SORRY to anyone if I was in the way at all. I just tried to stay tight on the pins and give plenty of room for you guys to race.
Most important thing I learned, never hold someone off for 15 laps and then think they will give you room in the turn when they finally make the pass! Tiffany taught the rookie a lesson about the overlap rule and it cost me a pickle fork tip but man it was fun! That young lady is one hell of a driver, she wore me down and then slammed the door to finish the pass!:D
I had a blast and can't wait to get back at it!
One more thing, Tracy Hawkins and Tony Terry gave the crowd something to watch this weekend. Awesome racin guys! Who says the old guys can't still get it done?!:p

hey nate,,,,,,
you had the boat aired out awsome with major speed on all the straights
actually saw you had speed on the leaders a few times
next race tips
lane 4 not 8 in the corners with traffic:)
you and tim did a great job in the 45
doug
i never changed any wiring from highlands last yr
i knew to do so
but have been soo busy with shops commercial parts for last yr
that boat has taken the back seat for maintanance
highlands this yr battery cables were so corroded inside
they wouldnt even take a charge
changed all battery cables at races
i did an ohm test last night just on the ground circuit for switchboxes,,,,,,
engine kill circuit has slight continuity with curcuit open
you know all the switches are corroded inside
so thats why it had a hard time to start,,,,,weak spark ,,,,,,
didnt go any further,,,,,,,all needs to come out
hopefully get some time before next race
i was happy it was still running
and just waived as people passed me down straights
good times
john

We had a drivers party Saturday night with all you can eat crawfish and FREE BEER from the fine folks at BUDWEISER!!!;)
Can't remember a race with more fun and good racing since I was a kid in St. Louis.

Somebody better go over the rule 9. overlap for OPC with the rookie drivers.
It specifaically says "an overlap is estableished when the overtaking boat has passed the overtaken boat sufficently to change lanes without contact."
If Tiffany truly slammed the door on you and took your right picklefork off without leaving you a lane than it was grounds for a penalty.
I was not there so I did not see it but it sounds like the new drivers think that you can just move over when you are somewhere in front of the boat you are passing.
THIS NEEDS TO BE ADRESSED SO NOBODY GETS HURT OR THEIR BOAT COMPLETLY TORE UP.
Lets teach the rookie drivers the right rules and make them better drivers that will be respected for there driving abilities, not known for hacking to get ahead.:)
I am not directing this as to upset anyone, it is just an age old problem that keeps coming up because people don't really no the overlap rule.

Jeff,
Just to clear things up, Tim was the rookie driver and Tiffany is the veteran.
Sorry but I have seen more veteran drivers abuse the lane change and overlap rule than any of the rookie guys. They are under the assumption we will just back off to keep from getting hit:cool: You want to talk about hacking and no respect,,,,,,,,It's not correct to assume the new guys have the problem and do not know the rules, also,,,,, I am not trying to paint everyone with the same brush here either!!! We all have made mistakes ,,,It's racing ,, things happen

Is Tim really a rookie, or does winning a few national championships in kneerider make a difference. Then there was the season in tri-hull.
And there is an entire lifetime of boat racing on his dads shirt sleeve.
Not many kids spent every afternoon at Second Effort.........
Not really a rookie by definition.
He is genetically programmed to race boats................

Yeah, Tim isn't a rookie and neither am I but we both were treated as such as new 45 drivers. So was Steve Merleau. Just stripes to earn I guess.
Hey Timmy, does the name David Cope ring a bell from Second Effort?
As far as the APBA, PTT , rules are concerned ,,,,,Yes ,,Your first year in a particular class makes you a Rookie for that class, Most all of the class's have rules that pertain particularly to them that new drivers to that class should be aware of.
No one is discounting anyone's previous time spent racing in other class's or past experience.

There is a gray area there! If you have been batteling for position for 15 laps the inside boat could be considered to be the overtaking boat at the corner and then the rule is cockpit to cockpit! A rule that I personally LOVE!:D I personally don't agree with alot of the rules that opc has inplace but would love some rules put into effect for lap boats! Tiff and Tims race was just good old fashined racing! Was a plesure 2 watch but would have liked 2 see Tiff had a shot at the win! I hate 2 see a boat that don't even have pickel forks win any race! It might have been fast but it is UGLY!:p

Look guys, all I meant was that I had NO IDEA she was about to turn left when my pickle forks were at the back of her capsule.. She and I had been racing hard and I moved out a lane when I saw the leader in my mirror and it allowed her to move along side. When we got to the corner she had a half a boat at most and I guess thought I was going to let off. I thought I still had her at least for one more lap so I stayed in there and got clipped.. Thats it, nothing more. Maybe I should have known half a boat means overlap or maybe she was just tired of racin me and ready to make the pass but no difference because now I know.
She would have never gotten by me at all if I hadn't left room for the leader to come by. Thought I was doing the right thing but found out later that if I'm in a battle of my own the leaders had to find a way around.
NO hard feelings what so ever, I stand by what I say that Tiff. is a great driver and we had a great race. Hell, I was glad to have been beating anyone considering I'm in that tired old boat with one prop and 15 minutes seat time!

It does place all of the burden/responsability on the overtaking/faster boat which is a good thing. It also makes the drivers police themselves to a point so that a judgement call by an official doesn't come into play. Quoting Duke Waldrop, " boat racing is fun" always remember that first and formost.

I haven't been keeping up on you OPC guys for a while I didn't know you started racing 45's Tim, but I will tell ya that I had a feeling late last year that you might jump ship from the Tri-hull gig and go 45...:D
Glad to see you still have that lets go have "FUN" attitude!....looking forward to reading about your season.........

05-09-2008, 08:51 AM
You are correct Tim!!! If your battling for position, then its up to the leaders to figure out how to get around both of you. But then like Jeff said, Once the boat on the outside was overtaking you, they haven't establish the overlap until they have cleared you without making any contact. Alot of racers think that once you are 1/2 a boat length ahead or cockpit to cockpit passing on the outside that they can come over. Not true!! Only applies to passing on the inside.
Anyways, Sounds like you had fun, and will be a contender soon.

Here is the same boat with close up of the lower unit. What is the best set up? Too high....too low.....just right? Prop efficient? What are you trying to achieve in set up?That looks perfect.. With 4 blade props you run the motor as high as you can long as the motor still gets some water. One thing to watch out for is with the motor that high sometimes the boat will have a tendency to blow out or try and switch ends going straight. Nunez runs his up that high and it's cool as sh!t when he turns cause you can here the prop loosing grip and skipping across the water. Sounds like the motor has a rev limiter or something.
