View Full Version : Pitch Gauge Use
Ron Hill

Lauri lives across the pond, in Sweden or one of those COLD places...but he's both props from me for awhile. Recently, he bought a pitch gauge from me off e-bay. Here's his note to me...(He Ok'd me printing it)
Ron,
I'm getting the hang of it. I knew how the gauge works (I read the
>>tutorial on BRF), but really "reading" the gauge ain't that easy, in
>>other words knowing what the numbers tell you. Can't say I can find a
>>good prop just measuring it, this quick, but I found some similarites
>>between my best props. And I've picked a trick or two.. Plus a few
>>things I wouldn't believe, if I didn't see them myself. More testing and
>>measuring and modifying propellers, maybe I learn to know what kind of a
>>prop my boat needs.. The gauge was definitively a good buy. Propably
>>should of bought one a few years earlier..
>>
>>Thanks!

:D Lauri lives in Helsinki Finland, but why spend your money on
a pitchometer?
I find it a total waste of money, you can do it
much better and cheaper than what this machine does the job
:D Note! This "pitchometer" only measures about one inch along
the propeller profile, you want to know the pitch along the
whole profile, right?
Never the less, if someone want my pitchometer it goes for 100 $
but I do not recommend it for anyone!

Ron,
The old and trusted pitch measuring method is shown on boat4um, but only for members!
How do you measure this with "the pitchometer"?

Here is another graphic to show you why "Pitchometer"
is pure b.s.!
Are you interested in the pitch of only 1/6 of the blade?

I thought that was why you should measure more than one place?
Your method requires mulitple test positions as well as you illustrate with your image.
I have used your method. It is inexpensive and accurate, but cumbersome. I had difficulty shaping the correct curves on the paper stock and difficulty with the paper not retaining the correct curve for a given diameter. Maybe tin or copper would be better. It also requires math proficiency beyond the average racer. :(

Well the method is not mine only sole it from some
smart guy! :D
Yes it is a lot of work and even more plates involved
but on the other hand it is the only way you really know what you are actually measuring.
Those of you who want to try should go for alu plates
they are stiff enough to hold their shape and
are very easy to bend!

Well yes, Thomas, I think some of us ARE interested in the pitch of one-sixth (or even a finer discrimination) of the blade. I want to see the sequence of pitch-change from leading edge to trailing edge. I won't say that I'm so knowledgeable that I can tell you just what the prop will do from that information . . . but Ron can!!

Ron tells you to TEST, TEST and Test some more...if you want to run OUT FRONT...
I know WOMAN racer who does pretty well in 20 SS Hydro and A Hydro, who tested a week ago Saturday in 53 degree wether....But she doen't want to run up front, she wants to win...
I'd like to sell this little pitch guage for $125 delivered in the USA...

This guage goes left and right...Will do 16 diameter...
The little one is for left hnad only, to about 9 diameter.
This one is $300 and will go to 16 diameter...

Ron,
Ok, looks like I'll need the bigger one. I would like to buy it if it's for sale.

dang Ron. 300.00 for a pitch gauge. that's CHEAP.
Your's is fairly similar to the one i have. Got mine from Rundquist. Actually i have two. one is a racing gauge set, and the other is a dual set (right and left hand measuring).
cost on them from Runquist was about 1200.00

Ron,
My Pichometer seems to be broken... How do I get it to tell me what I want??? Will it make my boat go faster?

J-Dub just go ask your dad...And, "No, nothing will make YOUR boat go any faster..."....
If you are being a little bit serious....I calibrate my John Meyer guage by setting it on a prop that I know for certain what the pitch is...
