Wayne,
My dad isn't sure where he finished in the heat, but said he won the race overall. Thanks for all of the pics!

Tim--That's the way I remember it too. He was always running that boat loose, and as soon as things settled down he was back on the throttle. Many more loose V-88 photos to come.

Jeff--I think if there were money in forensic boat racing accidents we could make a team. When I post my series of Bob Hering blowing over at Kaukauna, Wis. see what else is flying through the air.

The first boat I ever raced was one of the hand-me-down V-88's from Brinkman. By the time I got it (several owners down the line probably) the bottom was warped .... hook on one side and rocker on the other .... it had a bad habbit of hooking in turns and I couldn't stop it from leaking even though it looked pretty good for another couple years. I sold it to a guy who stripped it and glassed the bottom to straighten it out. It weighs about 50 pounds more now, but it doesn't leak any more and the bottom is straight

I always thought that was the way you were supposed to drive runabouts. When I started I ran against Clayton Elmer, Bruce Nicholson, P.G. Stepelton, Charlie Bailey, Artie Lund, in the bigger classes and Louis Williams, Ray Yates, Bobby Wilson, and Lou Little in smaller classes. Never figured out how to make a runabout turn fast without standing on my head. Too much room in the cockpit. Hard to hang on the the steering wheel, keep the power on and , stay in one place. Seems like I was always sliding backwards. Never had that problem in a hydro.

Hats off to the runabout guys.
