Speedmasters weren't "Super" until 1965. SSM-1 or 1-SSM refers to the first Super Speedmaster made for Mercruiser sterndrives. This is a non Super "Speedmaster" from 1962 to 64. It is only suitable for inline 6's up to 100 hp, but will bolt up to any inline 6 full gearshift tower. It can be adapted to 1961 DR towers, but not 1957 to 1960 DR's. The 60 and 66 ci powerheads can be adapted to use it by transplanting in a 1961 70 hp FGS crankshaft, but not with original Mk75/78/600/700 DR cranks (the splines are different).
Word of caution .... the gear ratio is 1:1 and the lowest pitched props made for these lower units is 15" which works out to about 80 mph. If your boat isn't capable of 80 mph with a std lower unit, this lower unit is probably going to bog your Merc down and burn pistons.

Mark 75 is right it was called Speedmaster. I raced one on the 800 Merc in OPC SH class. They came in 1 to 1 or 14/15 gears, right or left hand. I still have the one I set the SH record within 1974. The one on e bay sold for over $500. They were good units but not for over 100hp.
