there is a difference in porting, 40 is not goin to go like a 60, port timin is Different.
My 40 was done by Hydrotec it's running pretty good but I'm wanting to make this 60 block into a play motor for most hp I can get out of it. Can the 60 block be made out to be more or less than the 40 block or will they be about the same? Fig they had a little different ports but are the same everywhere else 59 ci
i've known some who have tryed with the 40 hp, 60hp allways left out on them
I'll be running a 59 ci 60 short shaft tiller on my Thundercat this year, it's bone stock and as yet hasn't been tested. Mostly a lake boat, some racing.
Read through the 40 posts, good info. Don't plan on making motor changes till I know what I have and for all I know, it may be fine the way it is.
Will work on set up first then make sensible motor changes as required. The goal is to keep the motor alive, have fun and go a little faster as time goes on.
Looking forward to opinions posted here.

I think the 40,50,&60 powerhead 59 ci were the same motor. Only reason there were separate part numbers was diff reed stops and carbs I would imagine. I know the 60 aren't held back as much as the 40 are. But in the end you've still only got 59 ci unless there's something I'm missing

Yeah I've heard the port timing was a little diff but in the the end after all port work was done wouldn't matter if it was a 40,50,55,or 60 - a 59 ci Merc block is a 59 ci Merc block regardless of hp rating.Quote:

I gotcha so that boat ran 42 mph with a stock M40D that's pretty good. I'm hoping I can get around 60 outta the one I'm going to get this spring pending on selling the boat I have now. You aughta be able to get around 50 mph out of that Tohatsu. It won't run with these Mercurys but it shouldn't be expected to either its a lot smaller displacement. There are several guys that work on those to build em up. Kent Foreman in LA and Hydrotec in MO are two that I know of that you won't be disappointed in. Good luck man hope to see ya at AugustaQuote:

Yessiirr they both do. Talked to one of em about it today. Got a friend wanting one done those two are about the only ones that I've drove or rode in a boat with their motors on the back. Hydrotec built mine and Kent built several of my buddies motors and they all run good and never had a problem out of any of em. Those 5 degree days these motors fired right up and ran all day long. Can't beat that. You'll want to shave the head, get the crank welded, 70 carbs, tuner work, and port work and a new prop that will hang with it. Good luck man. If you need anything holler at meQuote:

heres a pic of what i'm talkin about.you here so much about the v6 guys stuffing the crank case and whatever they can.
theres quite a bit of space there you could fill in.
we looking forward to coming up there and racing ya;ll starting to test this weekend we need to know how long the drag coarse is for sure so we can set our boats up for the correct distance. we don't circle race.Quote:

Since this is a thread about the differences in the 59ci mercs, what is the difference in the 40/50 and 60 cranks? Does the 60 have more stroke?
just different splines to suit the 40/50 box ??
