45's are mid 1980 motors...Powerheads aren't the expense.
A 45 Racing gearcase to build from parts is $1,700.
A 45 mid section is between $1,000 and $1,500
Legal 45 rods are $400 a set
Trim ram is $300, not counting the trim motor...
You need black black with a single lifting ring (One bolt) (40 to 60 HP).
If it isn't a 60 HP, you'll need a set of carbs. ($100 to $300)..

Longbeach is one of the most fun and best venues we have, but, alas, the parking and pit area sucks as far as room would be concerned. They will jam them in so tight that crew vehicles are limited to I believe one per race boat. So, best find a room somewhere and commute to the course.Quote:

Three reasons I see 45 being a real class in Regions 11-12...
1. Sea-Way Marine, Greg Jacobsen, had the fore sight to buy the rights from OMC on parts, and then build and stock parts.
2. Bill Curtis did,does and will build you a good motor, fix you parts, help you all at very reasonable rates
3. RJ West, Warren West, Steven Dawe, Spence and Shawn Love, Chad Hill all raced Stocks when they were kids...Dean Wilson, Steve Wilson and Kevin Curtis have raced the calls off and on since it started, most have raced since 9 years, over twenty years...Jason Williams' dad raced...John Lanes' dad raced....Chuck Skelton raced himself...You know when you go to a race there will be boats to race against...Most 45's are "LIFER RACERS" meaning this is a sport they will stay with for life..Thomas Lieby's dad and Mom both raced...Joe Brain switch from Ski Racing...
4. Revolution builds a cool looking boat for a fair price. And before that, a Gran Prix was and is a cool boat. Jason Williams seems to win with his, still!
5. Roger Carr has kept a close eye on motors being legal.
6. Having a Series that races with the larger inboards has been good, too.
7. It is a good class, all the safety equipment we can get our hands on, speeds aren't too fast...not too hard to work on, easy to transport...
Running 45's with kneeler isn't easy as 45's require divers...
The APR has raced SST 60 for years and still gets good fields...
Not SST 60 gearcases around that I know of. That is why I make a nose cone for the nitro case, you can make a "POOR MAN'S" SST 60 case!

I need one of your nose cones for a nitro case.
Building a river boat for my nephew to run here in South Carolina.
Motor will be 45" w/ nitro case. nothing really fancy But I would like to make a few mods to the engine. ie finger ports, head, tuner etc. flat bottom fiberglass boat w/ small pad. Any sugestions you can give will be greatly appreciated. I have experience w/ 49" 3cyls but that was 25 years ago. so kinda rusty.

The main reason the SST60 class dwindled down, was because the people running the OMC series and race program never pushed the 60 class.
There was vested interests in both "45" and the now dead "100" class. Both were promoted to a much greater extent.
Also, because in the begining of the "45 " program, it was raced at many stock outboart races as there was both a 45 SS stock class and a SST45 OPC class.
I believe if some of the people that race "45" motors got a ride in a good "60" boat, things would be a bit different.
