Is the plastic screen in water pick up in it's proper place? If loose, water pump pressure will pull it up and close off water pick up.

.280" with steel. .300 with dual stage fiber. Measured from top of bottom reed.
Just a FYI. The 1989 and 1990 EP nationals were won with a motor similar to the one pictured. The winning motor did not have the exhaust holes as shown, others in the race did have them.
Appears you about 3" too deep. When you raise the motor enough to stop the transom over wash you will need a different prop.
The only gear ratio for 3 cylinder is 15:28. The 12:29 is for 2 cylinder and will last about as long as it took me to write this if used under a good 3 cylinder power head. The SST 60 clutch is not...
I would not use surface gap plugs until the cooling problem is corrected. The center electrode usually ends up in the combustion chamber instead of in the plug body. Don't know why you chose the lost...
The timing shown in your manual is probably taking today's so called gas into consideration.
If my old memory is close, it would be between 1969 and 1971. The timing decal is correct for that motor. If you can post a few pictures.
Usually caused by overtightening of plug. Sometimes by plug not being rated for temp or compression that is being exposed too.
First off I agree with Austin that these motors did exist from Mercury. I would think the problem you are having with the idle is the stator. You said you have a manual so do a resistance check. I'm...
Larry Davis of Hinesville, Georgia held the NOA record in the 40-70 V class with a speed just over 86 mph. He was running a 13' Critchfield with 49 cu in three cylinder OMC. He was on BRF at one time.
My guess as to why it didn't pass inspection would be that it was not designed or sold by someone in "high position" with APBA. That's very important when safety is an issue.
Just read my statement again. Then look at the pictures. They have had the info corrected since my post.
The rear of the block has webbing between outer head bolt hole and exhaust side on the lost foam. The permanent cast does not have it. Look at the pictures that were posted earlier in this thread.
The permanent cast doesn't have glue lines to restrict and disturb flow. It also has higher crankcase pressure.
If building a performance motor, you want the permanent cast rather than the lost foam.
This info is reversed. The block with the painted head is a permanent cast and the one with the unpainted head is lost foam cast.
The first year for the 56 was 1986 and it was permanent cast....
Before making any of the changes recommended you need to find another place to run. If you experience a blow out running in this location, those bridge pilings are gonna hurt.
I would suggest you start with a new compression guage. I've never known a motor with a problem to have compression that even.
Does anyone know what carbs the "A" and "B" series main jets fit? I have several in my jet box and don't remember what they are for.
If you are referring to changing 2 and 3 cylinder gears..the only difference is the way the forward gear bearing is supported. You have to change the forward bearing carrier with the gears. 2...
All SST60 gearcases came with the flat drive key. The woodruff style was used on 2 and 3 cylinder shafts in the 70's. All later shafts are flat key design. 2 and 3 cylinder gearcase housings are the...
But those props are few and far between, just look at all the postings on this website for 12-12 1/2 X 23-24" props folks are trying to hunt down. Not and easy task since...
In the mid 1970's Merc made this same change, or maybe the reverse of it, to their 3 cylinder's and changed the horsepower rating from 65 to 70. I don't remember which way it was changed. Other...
OEM bolts were 1/4-28 with 1/4 12 point head.
Appear to be SSM VI shim guages and bearing cup installer for rear propshaft bearing.
75hp 1975 is a 49 cu in. 1989 70 is a 56 cu in. The 1989 is a much better motor.
You are correct on the gear ratio's. The 1.64 was on the early 3 cylinder 65 hp motors that came out in 1972. They were poor performing motors. By switching to a 2:1 unit from a 50 hp of the same...
The 1987 70hp is a permanment cast 56 cu in bridged exhaust motor. It should be a better motor all around than the 60 which is a oval port motor. I've never played with the exhaust tube length in a...
That's what I'm saying. The splines in the 60 crankshaft and the splines on the other driveshafts you ask about are not matches.
Different crankshaft splines.
No. I never tried the plastic tops.
The biggest improvement in the cooling was moving the tell-tale outlet to the top of the block rather than the side. It allowed steam a place to escape. Always use a 6 blade impeller rather than the...
SST60 spec sheet can be found on opcrace.com website. The permanent mold cast blocks are preferred for mod motors. They were found on 1986 and 1987 70 hp motors. They are not legal for SST60. The...
Have you tried choking the carbs individually to see if maybe there is only one that's causing the problem? If it's all three then I don't think carbs are the problem unless it's the old style carbs...
There were many 20" 75's built.

I don't think the 650xs was ever approved as a SE/FE motor by APBA. I don't remember why, maybe because it was advertised as a high performance racing motor. I know during that period there were a...
I ran across this in some old papers and thought it may answer some questions that I've heard about these motors. Mainly when they were introduced.
If it is an ignition breakdown, first try disconnecting the black/yellow wire from the power pack. That will eliminate the kill switches and wires. If you still have the problem, change the power...
Just curious..How is the left powerhead the solution if you have a right gearcase?
Try usplastics.com.
Both Mercury and Yamaha used knock sensors on their 2 stroke EFI models. They were mounted on a head bolt. They are probably still available.
At this point I'm not sure. I will sure post it if I run across it. Some of my older mags were lost in a fire a few years back. Lost everything older than 1980 and some others.
Ran at Lakeland, Florida
Ran at North Liberty, Iowa
Run in Dayton, OH
Any Eufaula results from the 70's would be a great help. I lost all my mags prior to 1980 in a fire. If it would be easier to email them to me, the address is hsamtheman@aol.com. The stock, mod and...
In any case....thanks much for posting that Popa Sam because it's good to know the history.
You are very welcome. I'm going through my old propeller and powerboat mags trying to put...
Some more great drivers.
