If you bought a replacement set of decals from Merc back when they were still available, they had little decals to cover the "formula" with offshore, Mod VP, 2.4, 2.0, etc. I still have half a set...

R Austin on last page has it perfectly correct...IT IS an early hi perf. 2.4 200hp with mods.
It's a high perf version because it has an aluminum flywheel, unpainted heads and exhaust cover plate,...
Jimbo's accident happend during the 1985 Sacramento F1 race. I was standing right at the spot with Ed Lane, looked really bad.
The primary problem with forced induction on 2 stroke engines like ours is that there are few good ways to prevent the added charge volume from going out the exhaust port. Turbos work pretty well...
For high performance use, you really are better off with it on. When each crankcase intakes, it will "see" 2 carb venturis instead of 1. Same concept as the cross drill on a Merc V6 intake.
I remember a rule change around 1986 or 87 limiting port height on the mercs. It made our 2 yr old factory merc ModVP engine obsolete. The "new" spec was better than the stock mercs came from the...
They do some crazy s**t down there!
Hey Jeff, didn't you have a gray colored eliminator back in the day, and then a Lavey?
Be careful...they have a bad rep for high speed blow over.
Would be interesting to see the inside and transom of that boat. Might be a real peice of ModVP history.
Speaking of the 850xs, what are they worth? There's a guy in my area trying to sell one in so-so cond for $800.
That's right...it's been forever since I've done any of the calcs manually.
Torque is a measure of twisting force. Imagine your torque wrench applying 100ft lbs to a large, stationary bolt. It's not moving, and doesn't create power...horse or otherwise, until it is applied...
SST120 would be based on a later block, so probably better to get parts for. Otherwise, the std 2L could be made to run as well or better than a stock 120.
Rick Hoffman had driven at least one Mod U Seebold before that. His Dad, Ken Hoffman, owned one and "Risk" was the co-driver.
The greatest loss of fuel delivery will probably be due to the displacement of fuel with oil in higher ratios. It would be interesting to know if a lighter viscosity oil in the same ratio would flow...
The same mods done on 2.4L Mercs will work for the 2L. Look up T-Rex's "cherry 2.4" project for some good info. Also search S&F for rod slot and exhaust chest pics. That'll be a good start.
The theory is correct. The difference in performance tells you that something is not set up the same between the 2 boats.
It is a little high, should be about 4-6" at the step in the center pod.
I've run outboards on AV gas for years and never had a problem just pouring the oil in and running it.
I think he is aking about using a case that was originally machined/matched to another block. I've mixed Merc v-6 stuff with no problem, but each motor is different.
Yes, it is a Stoker. It's not my boat, but I think it had a stock SST120 powerhead on it, about 200hp.
I think you will find the problem quickly by switching the oil injection components between the engines. What controls the alarm? Is it in the EFI ECU? If so, exchange those also. Only swap one...
If your going to go very fast on a light boat, I'd replace it. Welded skegs on the bigger V-6 stuff have been known to break off at high speed. That allows the boat to turn sideways and barrel...
As for leaded vs unleaded, the lead residue coats everything that comes in contact with the burning fuel. It stands to reason that it has some level of lubricating value on pistons, rings, and...
Thanks Bill, that's the kind of info we need. I'll be emailing you.

Watch your local craigslist or other classified for a 135/150/and some 175 mercs. They are the 2L engines, they should be cheap. Don't worry about the engine being blown, their easy to fix with...
The prop shaft height rule is measured with the shaft parallel to the bottom. The engine may be trimmed in or out but the engine cannot be lifted above the limit set in the rules.
I assume you are asking how the inspecter might check it, not what's the difference between the 2 types.
The port configuration can be seen by removing a spark plug and looking in the cylinder...
All the carbs in 2L class were checked at inspection last year and passed. Like capnzee said, better check them.
Hey Rex, Ron Hill has a V-bottom Lazer for sale. Don't you like those turkeys....uh...I mean fine boats? Rons a nice guy, he'll let ya borrow it.
That blue plate and the cast one look like they are for the early model block with the large exhaust opening. Did you get into someones old tunnel boat race stuff?
I might be interested in one of the extra plates.
It'll ruin your day if you run out of fuel, or suck a bunch of air and starve the top carb.
DB, if you run like we did, you'll turn about a 4min lap. With 60 laps, thats 4 hours. Two pit stops = 3 driving segments for your 3 drivers. That's 1hr and 20min each. Your engine will burn...
Let us know if we can help with anything on this end. Would be great to have you come out.
Hard to describe without a piture. You need 2 on each bank, inboard side of the block, one above each of the bottom 2 cylinders. Confused? Do a search on the S&F boards and you'll find a picture. ...
True about us not taking safety seriously. Only right at the end, after I'd seen a few accidents, did I start looking at it. I wondered, Why do motocross riders wear more safety gear than we do? ...
That Molinari was a cool looking little boat. I think it had a v-4 on it.
Tim, I think Teddy's boat was a Molinari. He had been restoring it and getting it ready to race for a while, but was killed in a testing accident before it was finished.
One more of 86. Thats Teddy Whalen's boat in the background. I think it was Sergio Calvo who drove it in Teddy's honor.
Hi Val. What year was it that you had your accident in Havasu. I remember the first mini boat race where so many boats were over in the first 15min, they had to stop the event. All the rescue...
Stockton is an inland city upriver from San Francisco. There is a deep water channel which makes it a sea port. They had to time the race heats so that the cargo ships could pass.
Walker Lake, maybe 86?
Stockton channel Sprint races, 1985.
Guess I'll throw in a few also. Havasu 1985, right hand turn, my favorite place to pass! Look at the water...a lot different than sprint racing!
Hey Al, nice to see you here on BRF.
I agree that the speeds need to remain below 100 for the Mod VP boats, but would rather see the weight increased SLIGHTLY instead of lowering the prop shaft. ...
It is true that the Mod VP STV's were faster under certain conditions, but rough water wasn't it. Professional drivers like Chris Bush could make it work, but lots of novice types didn't fair so...
Yes, I've "ducked" a few boats, 2 of them were STV's.
Joe and Steve, I wouldn't worry about the STV's. They're not the ideal platform for a rough water race, at least not with a novice driver. IMO they're not any faster than the other modern designs...
