I hope you're not using those short opening cages shown in your photo.
I love reading all these stories of yesteryear. Thanks everyone for taking the time to share them. I sometimes feel like I was born 20 years too late. I was just starting out in boat racing back in...
I'd like to see and learn more about this topic too!
Question: Is it true that there are no propshaft height restrictions for Kilo record attempts?
Probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. Some props (racing props I presume) that are made for a splined shaft have what appears to be no safegaurd against a catastrophic collision with a log,...
How much H.P. do you hope to get from these mods? Without a set of open megaphones, I would guess maybe 5hp. And you'll lose a lot of bottom end power.
If it were me, I'd try slipping a 65hp Merc...
NAPA used to sell seal kits for bunches of the ol' OMC's. They had #18-2684 for 1958-73 18hp motors (and a bunch of others). It included everything you needed to replace all the oil stoppers in...
I started out in racing with the Northwestern Illinois Outboard Association in 1976. No scales, no inspection, no hassles, run what you brung and have a good time. Whatever hp your motor was rated...
All these internal mods seem like a lot of work for a river racer. What kind of HP gain would you like to see? Another 5hp, 10hp? I really don't know. :)
In my opinion, there is much more performance to be gained by switching to the newer 2 ring keystone style pistons and rings. :)
My service manual says it's the brown wire coming out of the CD unit.
Just ground the brown wire and you'll shut her down. But lemme double check on my motor tomorrow. The manual's a little vague.
This reminds me of the ol' RB (restricted B) days in the PRO division. Remember how fast they could get the Yamato 80 going? Mod the heck out of the motor, run it on methanol, and it would run around...
Happy Birthday Gene!
Oh...but those oldies were SO quiet with that extra shrouding! Seriously. Undoubtebly the quietest motor of that era.
But I agree, the extra shrouding added about 25lbs to them.
You have a small Johnson.
Just kidding. Ages ago, my Dad sooped up an 'ol 35 rude with a Jet Pack carburator on the intake bypass ports of the motor. He says it was good for a small gain.
Back...
I don't know if you've seen this before. One of my webpages with some photo scans of old racing programs. They're not very good photos. But maybe they'll help.
:)...

An LST stopped at the Quad Cities on the Mississippi this fall. I veiwed it from the outside only. Too big of a line waiting to get into it. I hate standing in line. Maybe that's my own side affect...
I'm glad to hear that John... I've seen you drive a hydro! :p
Just kidding John.
Hey, if you wanna see a bunch of runabouts, come to watch Top O' next year! It's not too far from you. You'll see...
Alt/Luce boats? Are those the ones that look like a big 'ol lima bean?:p

Sounds like a Roskowski ignition. I've seen his ignition on a Dmod motor and it looks like a real nice setup. Call Steve to see if he has a system for the FE motor. :)
A simple, reliable igniton. But a 3cyl Tohatsu ign. might not be ideal for a form E. It depends on a big heavy flywheel.
(heavy by Mod standards anyway:rolleyes:)
I hope FastFred will weigh in...
Bob Ford is from Algonac, MI. He raced CSH at Augusta last year ('08). Might wanna try to get in touch with him. He might be a strong lead to hunt down that boat.
Good luck. :)
What direction is the seal facing? The fix may be as simple as turning the seal around to face the other way. :)
The KA5A measures the same as nearly all other KA series carbs. No performance advantage.
Just tiny differences in idle pasages etc.
BTW, the KA5A is from an old Merc 200 (20hp)
Hope this helps.
So... do you have any extra 50hp Tohatsu covers lying around? I'm always lookin' for a spare.;)
BTW 70mph is pretty respectable for the setup you discribe. :)
I could be wrong. But I don't remember any difference between the two lower units you have. My first assumption would be that the shiftshaft is not oriented correctly. I think the service manual...
Oh sure, I remember the ol' Hawkeye club! They hosted a lot of races right in my backyard so to speak. I remember that they were very active in the mid 1970's. I went down to watch their races. They...
I agree with Sam.
I think the single biggest problem with the 3cyl Merc service engine is cooling. Be sure to have a good water pump, thermostat (if you use it at all), and have the cooling vent at...
How about a rating, comment AND subscription?
You made another great video.
Wayne, PM me your address. I'll send the prop to you. :)
Will you be in Muscatine for the boat show again this spring? If so, I'll see you there! :)
I look forward to seeing you and the boat! By the way, Ring of Fire is my second favorite Johnny Cash...
Looks like a Merc 60-J to me.
Sorry to interupt again. But I just looked more closely at pic #8. That's a Corvette with a trailer hitch! OMG! My dad owns a red vette just like that one, less the trailer hitch. I just put NOS on...
Tom, Thank you so much for posting these photos. These bring back a lot of memories. I was club racing boats just like these in the late 70's and 80's. The club I raced with was behind the curve by...
Last season I raced my first Top O' Michigan marathon. It was also the first time I shared the the water with the SLT's. I'll never forget getting the @*#& beat out of me while racing thru the big...

I hope ya win it! It would be great to read about you...
I dunno how to change from a 9.9 to 15.
BUT-
I do know how to change a motor from a 15 to a 9.9...change the engine cover.
At least, that seems to be how everyone around here does...
Christian, No problem kiddo. Just wanted to make sure we were still dealin'.
Keep me posted.
Thanks, Jeff.
I want to get rid of this box sitting in my garage. If you want it. Send me the money for shipping. If not, let me know. I'll sell it to someone.
Thanks, Jeff.
Dave, Thats the exact attitude I had for 15 years before I finally got it done. It was a dream come true! I sure hope you can make it next year for the 60th annual running. Can you imagine they've...
I gotta agree with Ed here.
Yes, You might be able to get that V4 to go a little faster. But, you've got a lot of things working against you. But hat's off to you for your thinking and exploring...
Great info. Thank you very much!
:)
I need to know what the "prefered" carb is for the old Mark 30 mod motor. I thought most guys were using some kind of KB part number tillotson now. But I can't remember for sure. Anyone know what...
Just some food for thought.
I've worked on more than a couple OMC service motors that would not pump water. I looked and looked for a water pump problem. Came to find out the powerhead had a blown...
Sorry for the smack talk. Can I blame it on the pain meds?
Yes, The 40 mods would be a handful. The 44 mods at the APBA North American Championships were a handful for my lil' Tohatsu too! If there...
What's Centralia? Is that a boat race? I don't see it on the APBA race schedule.
And, you mean they still race those old 40ci Mercs? I thought APBA dropped the 40ci class when Merc came out with the...
