WooHoo, that's me in the 250cc "K'-66" ! Alan Tilton in the F-92 350cc.
Anyway, back on topic. It was an honor to race against and with the Konig's. Dieter allowed us to stay in his house and work out of the factory on several occaisions and Peter used a Pugh Boat Works...
'Ol Fluke ! my Dad built him a couple of boats to run some Twister's or C6's on.
The Wannsee, long live "The Shark boat" it's a tourist boat that cruises by.
My brother Gary won the 250 nationals in 1987 with a diecast VA. In '88 or '89 Dieter gave me and Kirts the "new" VA to run at the nationals. I admired Dieter Konig, but I struggled with that engine....
Not claiming to be an entomologist, or even an expert on mud daubers, but they will still find the holes on the front of the lower unit. Also, go in an old barn looking for VW parts(or your...
Wayne,
You got mud dobbers! Bad for water cooled engines :)
Cash's drummer was W.S. "Fluke" Holland. A boat racer for quite a few years in the NOA OPC division.
My dad built two boats for him and he expressed an interest in having Gary build an outboard...
Nice piece of history. As I was reading, I was thinking you could change some names, dates and speeds and the story would apply to just everyone that ever nailed a boat together.
Sam,
I wasn't knocking either Rossi( Rex Hall ) or VRP ( Steve Litzel ) I know those engines are the real deal.
Back to the engine. The Boretta (sp) engine should be a 350cc. The induction was...
Poalo Boretta, Italy( spelling? I've confused myself now) brought that engine to Nottingham in 1984. I don't think he ran it, not sure if he even made any testing runs. I've got at least one pic, but...
I might be a little biased, but nearly everyone that ran 125 in those days went on to win APBA or UIM championships in everything from 250(OA) to
F1(OZ).
Between Trebor and Pete I believe is Todd Brinkman, John Stevens is right behind him.
In the other boat pics, V17 is Clyde Queen and 11 is Jeff Hutchins.
Looking at the photo that DeSouza put names to I see several more. In the bottom left with curly blonde hair and hat, Tom Kirts Jr just behind him, Todd Warren. Center right is Pete Hellsten with...
My Dad and Mom went to Claudes "99" birthday party about a month ago, It was on short notice and I was working. His wife, Julie, was at the Louisville Boat meeting and invited everyone. The party was...
I was talking to Gary about this thread today. I reminded him that he was perhaps the last one to try to qualify a Harrison "B" engine at a national championship.
At the worst APBA National...
On the topic of sleaves. On our Yamato 250's, we just put the half block in the oven, let it bake till the sleave fell out. Had the new sleave in the freezer, reheated the block, dropped the new...
I think I know why Danish Sushi didn't catch on :)
Glad to see you were in the MBZ, at first I thought you may be in the green Renault 4TL in the first pic. Also, if anyone wants to know, thats a...
That photo of Dieter at the work bench looks just like one I have of Peter at a drill press.
Claude Fox celebrated his 99 birthday a few weeks ago. He may be older though, it's just that Julie...
That photo of the cabover crash has bare hills in the back ground. Lake Spivy was just south of Atlanta and would probably have a cover of pine trees.
My dad says the Lake Spivy course was a "ball...
Chris,
OMG!!!!!!! Is that a dugout in your avatar??? Have you gone completley to th the dark side? ;)
I love kids, got three, no more bedrooms in the house, just may have to stop. Just told Jim...
I only wish that was the '84 boat(built in '82). The '84 boat went to Bob Saxvik and may have changed hands a few more times since. Danny Williams has the '85 boat, its the one in my avatar. I sold...
Mark,
It was nice to meet you and your wife(name?) at the Louisville, TN show. I appreciate that your wife took the time to help with my son, Ryan, so I could set out all my crap. Unfortunately,...
OK viewers, once again, Wayne has just laid down some outstanding photos.
See how narrow the canal was? Thats about as close to actual size in a pic that I've seen. A couple of shot's of mine...
Tegal looked the same in 1986, just the boats and cars were a little newer, the Americans still had the "funny" looking boats...and oh yeah, the hair was higher. I suppose the "shark" tour boat made...
Wayne,
I just have to add that your photos are AWESOME!
This sort of tinkering is why I always wondered why people were trying to improve Dieter's work? I guess it's easier to blame the engine maker or boat builder than just to admit you are bad at set up...
Now would be a good time for me to re-iterate my description of a runabout.
RUNABOUT : noun & verb- Run about so far and tip over.
Coincidence? I think not.
Seeing the pic of the boat in a box got me to thinking about maps. Here's a link to a sat image of where I think the Konig factory was. It's actually a little below the green arrow on the right side...
I'm going with the noise supression reason.
As a side note, the inside of Dieters dyno room was lined with different expansion chamber designs. It was also dark, wet and smelled of castor oil.
I like that picture, thanks Steve. 100 mph must have been FAST in the '70's! John Stevens went 101 in '84 and Sean McKean went 107 in '92, both with Pugh/Yamato combos. The record is ripe to be...
Thats also a nice pic of the "half A" What do you do with a Konig FA once a rod breaks the block?, cut the bad part off and make a 125cc engine!
I had one too, but we broke the top cylinder, used...
That overnight storm was the one that crashed my Hedlund. It was pointing to the lake with the Y-80 on back. The wind "blew it over" onto the Hardins trailer. Crunched the nose a little, I don't...
We are firmly seated in "The Wayback Machine" now.
"X" is me in the MOH/125cc boat I mentioned above. As usuall, the exhaust has broken and I've gone from 25 horsepower to 10:(
V-1 is Jeff...
Wait a minute, I'M doing the towing! Thats Frank Milner on the hook. He "tested" alot too. We all did. Twenty gallons to test, four to race.
Hey look, my post count is 66, where's the lottery...
WOO HOO I made the thread, I made the thread!!!!
Look closely, the number is #66, the number of the late Mark Donahue. I don't know why Gary chose #67?
Yes, those are rookie stripes. 1977 was my...
Thanks for the link. It's nice to see familiar faces.
We have a funny story about the number #11. In 1984, as we were getting ready to go to Nottingham, we had a new boat to race there. For us,...
Corin,
Several years before that, Yamato has another experimental engine. It was an opposed four that had seperate blocks from the crankcase, kinda like two OSY blocks on a common crankcase.
It...
Lake Village,AR. '91? All I had to do was hold on one more heat to make the podium. Some of you know that Lake Village is some sort of inland ocean, so that was going to be hard. I wound up...
Jeff,
Sorry to hear about your brother. A european cabover was probably not the best idea for a kilo run, too much lift.
Jackus,
You have some nice stuff. There are some pics of Harry B's...
The UIM finally got around to changing the five boat rule. That was always a sore point with us. That gauranteed a world championship would be filled with slow boats being driven by squirrels who had...
We have most of all those three racing engines, even the "M" with the rounded cylinder.
I would just like to add that these boat comparisons are 20 years ago, thats a long time and I'm sure things have changed. I think Oliver Lucas and Marian Jung showed that at Depue when they ran OSY...
I have a 1970 2.2L 911 E in the garage so I know the back seat of a 911 is not a big space. With three kids, it doesn't get moved too often these days, VW buses rule!
I used to occaisionally go...
And it was Nicoletta that he borrowed the boat from...I think I owe her some money still?
That weekend was great. Hans backing the Krage truck into someones bus, knocking the open rear hatch off,...
Jackus,
Do you have a connection to Pierre Desertenne? He was a gentelman, so is his son Phillipe.
Corin, Horses for courses is correct. We never ran the tight turns and with out the jetty...
Great link Doris!
A while back, I posted some results from that event.

Herr Ralph was with his boat(red nosed Danisch) crew was...
To me, the coolest engine is the one you like the most. For me, it's the old "almost" Yamato 250 of mine. I almost won the nationals, I almost set two records and I almost blew over( I did nose dive...
When we were at Berlin-Tegal in '86, Uli Rochel was running the eight cylinder(a 350cc and 500cc stacked?) It was a reed valve engine too. By then the rules mandated gas and Rochel was mid pack. I've...
that looks just like PUGH BOAT WORKS, except the lack of pealing paint and 1/8" of saw dust on every thing:D
Gary didn't build a boat for Yamato till years later. I believe they ran a Butts with red engine cowl, I check my pics.
At Hinton, in 1977, Gary was 17. He was racing boat #4, a 125 that he won...
