My dad was co-race director with Pop Augustine of the 1977 PRO Nationals. I recall answering the phone one night, shortly before the nationals. It was Tom and he wished to discuss some logistics...
Pop Augustine and my dad, Bill Weaver, were the race directors. Charlotte Queen was the referee. The race course was huge and this led to many accidents. I believe that the Oak Ridge Boys...
Yes. Had not seen clyde in so many, many years. Where the hell is Normangee?
Wayne, I will be in the area for quite some time. We will get together! I love to see different parts of the country, so would be pleased to drive a and meet you.
Did the club have races in the Austin area?
Perhaps the lack of information as to aluminum hydroplanes (and relevant plans) is an indicator that one should consider a different direction. I would suggest wood and/or a wood composite mix. ...
I bought a VA around 1992. It was probably the last 4-cylinder 250 Konig sold new in the USA. We ran a ton of heats on it, but it was realistically outclassed by newer models at that time. I...
Simply said, generally yes. They can pack a ton of air under the bottom, thus they float over rough water that a typical US PRO boat would struggle with. Somewhere on this site, Ralph Donald posted...
I know I am hard of hearing and have selective hearing as well. I have not heard criticism of anyone's boats with the excpetion of the boat that came apart at the Worlds this October. Marc's boats...
I recall that a Konig FA held the record for a very long time around 97 mph. In the early 1990's, Sean McKean bumped the APBA record to 107 mph with a Yamato.
My guess is that this speed could...
We still have a complete powerhead. Somewhere on site are photo's of this engine.
....Dennis Hopper in those photo's or perhaps Dennis Hopper looks just like Bill Van!!
Wayne, you can always attend another day in the fields, the number of World Championships are limited!
The pipes on the FA in the photo slide maybe and inch of two. This made a difference on the top end. Often the pipes got stuck in the forward position. On one occaision, I reached back, grabbed...
Here you go Wayne.
Here are some photo's of my dad's FA 250 circa 1969. All original with the exception of 1 replacement pipe. I am not sure about the lower unit. It is a Konig, but I did check it carefully.
UH are the initials of the individual that assembled the engine at Konig. I believe that the U stands for Uhlie (SP?). UH is found on hundreds of Konigs.
Ralph Donald and Ed Thirlby, Sr. went to Berlin shortly after the factory shutdown. They were hoping to purchase castings, tools, etc. but were not successful. I am afraid much of equipment went...
We still have one of these. I want to say that dad bought it in 1969, his first manufactured alky engine. I am not sure that we still have the pipes (that were also used on the FM Konig engine). ...
Where was the race course in Hot Springs that hosted the North/South races?
Mr. Voss is still at it and not too many years removed from a 500cc runabout National Championship.
I ran 125cc Hydro at this race, the re-run of the Nationals from LaCrosse, WS.
Waldman was an all time great. But, the Quincy "team" of drivers included some real talents with the "Z" engines. The Kuglers had an outstanding Nationals at Lakeland (1982?). Jeff and Jack...
We had a Konig sliding throttle. I remember that the pipes hung-up quite often. Ran an identical pipe on our Konig "M".
We still have my dad's first FA. It was built in 1969 and had the sliding pipes. These maybe moved 2-3 inches. The carbs were in either side (righ/left) of the engine. IN the attached photo, my...
I have some Danny Photo's from Charlotte that I will have to find. He was the man, back in the day. OK, OK, Danny you are still the man!!;)
[QUOTE=Bill Van Steenwyk;67801]
The thing that spoiled that thought forever though, was I SAW WHAT THEY WERE SQUIRTING IN THE CAN RIGHT BEFORE SEALING THE LID ON. It was that awful "stuff" again,...
My dad still has his 1969 FA Konig. This was a two cylinder with sliding tuned exhaust. The carbs are located opposite of one another. This is the engine that in John Shubert's image. The earlier...
Indeed, this engine has had a couple of shakedown passes on an 1100cc runabout. It ran well out of the box, although I believe that a couple of tweaks may be required still. I do not know if Steve...
In my opinion, when this engine showed-up at the 1998 O-350 World Championships at Cypress Garden, it represented a inflection point in the advancement of PRO racing in the US. With the exception of...
Ron,
Any idea of the date of this string of photo's?
I guess PRO outboards have been experiencing spectacular blowover for over 40 years.
Not to complicate matters too much, but could you fit trim to the engine? This might allow a little greater flexibility in propeller selection.
Of course it is easy to make such a suggestion from...
I had one of these, but with the original Konig crankcase. Used a battery and points for ignition. Ran water injection into the pipes to help pull bigger props and for acceleration out of the...
I never saw a Delta run, but have seen one example personally. It looks like a Mod VP from the OPC category back in the day. To my eye, it does look like a boat that I would consider a monohaul. ...
There was a PRO version in Atlanta for a long time. I believe that it ran very well before being classified as illegal. I am not sure where this boat resides today, but I suspect in either Atlanta...
I guess I never noticed Konigs configured like that. It makes sense to protect the carbs. Did moving the weight of the exhaust change a boat's handling?
Something I noticed that is unusual in the photograph, it that the exhaust is on the left side of the engine. IF this is a Konig 700, it is the only one that I have ever seen with the exhaust coming...
The H-1 boat looks tiny for a 700 compared to the F-5. Wayne, et. al how long were the 700's back in the day?
I love those classic lines on the Yales and Butts.
I guess I do not remember John Yale well (the boats yes). IN the photo that follows, the driver looks a lot like Jeff Hutchinson from Lakeland, FL.
Hinton was 1977. I remember Mal driving a brand new Yale 500 that was a beautiful boat and probably would have been built around 1980 or so. I believe they got out of the 500 class around 1982-1984.
I do not recall Mal ever racing 700cc. I recall about this time or soon after, they got sold the 500 equipment, as Tom thought that the engine capabilities were too much for the boats of the time...
Wayne,
Just think how much more comfortable you would have been in a capsule boat. You could have probably rigged it with flip-up top and a dump tank!!:D
I have heard drivers say that I nearyl...
Hope your day is enjoyable!! Thanks for all your efforts related to our fine sport.
I won a 250 race once where we had the lower unit tucked under about 1/2 inch against a good field of boats. Never again would I drive like that and we won the race. Despite turing great, I was...
Wayne,
You just needed to cut a hole in the floor board in order to prevent a sudden, unpleasant shock!!
The 5th photo shows three runabouts. The closest is clearly number 77-T, often and today's Bruce Nicholsan's number. But the boat to 77-T's left has yellow paint and the driver appears to be Bruce....
If you race, you are an optimist. That little vibration will clear up!!:D
I felt my 250 "going away" two years ago at Raleigh and decided that a donut in the infield would clear things up. I had...
....of the botttom photograph Wayne!! I am guessing that did not just happen by accident. AH, art!!:D
That appears to be a boat owned by Paul Angel from Williamsburg, VA (my home town). Are any of these photo's from Toano, VA (Kilo's) or Portsmouth, VA? It has been 20 years or more, but I remember...
of ther boat name!!
Bob,
The engine looks great for its age!!
BTW - So do you...HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I believe that you are more ready to "run" than show however!!:D
DW
Wayne,
In the foreground of the sme photo are 2 boats numbered P-15. This is probably theDwight and Dennis McClellan. Also, F-11 is on the top of a trailer near the water. Would that have been...
