You will be better off to go ahead & pull the powerhead & replace the tuner.
When you get this apart you will be amazed at how restrictive the internal tuna/muffler is.
get some 70/75 3cyl...
you have got to get a jack plate ( see Carolina jack plate.com) BEST PRICES & simple plates. No new holes to drill, plate mounts to existing holes.
start looking in prop section here and on ebay...

Seen this happen a few times since I started work on outboards, (1973). the failures usually don't care if they are OEM or Aftermarket. I have Used Both & have no opinion as to which is better now....

Don't think that you will see much of an improvement switching impellers.
Are you having cooling problems now?
Don't need to run much cooler that they already do.
Use clamp swivel & trim from a yamaha pro 50, these work great. very easy to do.

Yes the 86 on engines have the bottom end, But you will still need to look back a few years for the short midsection.
The BEST of the BEST was a "Pop powered 75".

This engine definately took out the center cylinder & head.
Got a later model head for the rebuild.

Sounds like either water in your fuel or some trash in the carbs.
Either way it's fuel related if the choke helps.

The cross flow (super strangler / stinger gp, V4 racing pistons had a Scallop cut in the bottom of the piston on the intake side, w/ the block machined to match.

ie... DO NOT OVER PROP !
