Lot of great pics here! Notice on a couple of the twin engine pics the counter rotating props are turning IN.
I think you may have a one of a kind photo of a one of a kind engine. No. 191 is Jimbo and looks like a Goat Boat. Look at the cowling on that Super Strangler! They were experimenting with aero...
Brings back memories! Lots of Merc and Chrysler stackers. I see a red stripe Twister in one pic. Ted Morgan engine?
I don't have a degree, not a hydrodynamic engineer or anything else on paper that says I can design and build boats. Fact is, is does not take a rocket scientist. The first one of these that I built...
I don't know either Danny, when a D.F. Jenkins V-4 would outrun everything Mercury could build up until the V-6.
Second Effort in Florida made some OMC Mod-VP engines. When you mention OMC, Mod-VP and the 80's in one sentence there is one name that comes up....Al Stoker. He had the fastest cross flow and looper...
Did these early V-6 OMC race engines have the 6 two barrel set up or were they running the 3 two barrel carbs?
All boat racers will pick their best weapon (in this case oil) for what works best for them. I will have to tell ya, I have used Amsoil 100:1 in a LOT of recreational outboards over the years with no...
Keep in mine that all OMC portable motors (35 and under) were made to run on crap fuel. They told us at school one year that small OMC's can run down to 70 octane. Lot of room for carb and timing...
Yeah, Charleston has changed a lot! Danny, did you know that the Wild Geechee has been restored and is on Johns Island? I believe the guy that has it is either the son or nephew of the original...
In the first pic Jimbo is driving what looks like one of the first pickle fork Scotti Crafts. The boat that Posey (197) is in looks to be the same Scotti that they had been running V-4's on the year...
Last pic for tonight. Early press release of OMC's V-8. Notice how small the lettering is on the Johnson engine.
Tim and Geoff Briggs, Parker race '74 I believe. Too bad this pic is black and white. That stars and stipes Scotti Craft with the Super Strangler was really pretty I bet.
Renato Molinari. Again must be pre '72 and a Twister 1 engine.
Bob Herring, must be '70 or '71. Probably a Twister 1. Looking at the background, could be Havasu or Parker.
Miami, but not certain of the year. Was either '71 or'72. I believe this was the first race for the new Ted Morgan Twister engine. Pretty sure boat 199 is Bill Petty. Other boat in that pic looks...
Jimbo at Beloit. Molinari hull with what looks like the newer CCC engine.
Lets see if this first one works, then I have more that I have scanned.
1982 139.66 was Bob Spalding Hodges/V-8 Johnson
1983 144.16 was Rick Frost Burgess/V-8 Johnson
1986 was Bob Herring Karleson hydro/V-8 Evinrude
Was either 1984 or 1985 George Andrews set the...
Interesting, but why run the merc V-6 powerhead coupled to a Speedmaster drive unit?
Since the boat weighs 1000 pounds I would prop it to turn around 5700 to 5800 with a light load. That way when it has some load in it the motor will not be grunting.
I have a tech question about the F-1 V-8 tunnel boats that you guys might can shed some light on. All of those oversize tunnels that were built for the V-8's had FLAT top decks. Now, I race RC tunnel...
The biggest killer of Mod-VP was Mercury building "special" but still legal engines for certain (real good) drivers. This was done to try and outrun Al Stoker. When the other drivers found out about...
And to add to what Sam said, depending on the engine, shaving the head may be necessary to maintain whatever performance the engine had with standard bore. Many people assume that the slight increase...
There is something that I am trying to figure out about the history of Mercs "big block V-6"
In 1980 Seebold raced a Merc big block V-6 in Europe before the time of the V-8's. This engine did not...
Is this test going to be simply pumping/pushing the fuel through the 030 passage?
Just thinking.......might see more of a difference if the test actually flowed air through a carb and made the...
35-40 years ago there were several people around here who raced the 45/55 Chryslers on small kneeler tunnel hulls. They were quite swift.
Is there a lot of H.P. difference between that Johnson and Evinrude on the allys? Looks like the prop on the Johnson has a lot more rake.
Another year for good looking Evinrudes...it was either '76 or '77 they had two tone dark blue with a red white and blue placards on the sides.
No doubt when safety capsules came out racing crashes became much more survivable. It also became easier to drive because you no longer had to hold on to the boat.
Just making an observation...
I was watching the Havasu '72 vids yesterday and thought how these S class 100 cu. in. tunnel boats were such a great class of racing. I know the progression into the V-6 engines meant the end of it...
Thanks to Bruce for bringing the boat over to the RC races for all to see. It was really a curiosity for the younger guys who have never seen it. It was great to see it rebuilt with fresh red paint....
Those are some steep sponson angles. Notice the strakes and small flats at the very bottom. These flats transition out as they go forward.
View showing unique sponsons. Lots of curve in the topside from pickles to transom.
Another...I got several more
Lets see if this works. Pics of the Geechee taken this past weekend.
Failure issues..... answer... 100%
The forward gear and pinion are a matched set. That is why when you buy one it comes as both. Next time you have a gearcase apart look at the forward gear...
boat 49 still has cleats on the deck....very dangerous!
Try velocity stacks on your tests. Someone already mentioned that the air speed will be greatly reduced because of such increased throat volume. You might also try spacers of different thickness...
I was there when this went on. Allowing the 90 Yamaha powerhead to run on the smaller leg and lower was a very bad decision. The old NOA rules stated that the engine had to be "stock appearing"....
You Merc guys go back and look at post no.120
There was a big discussion on weather or not Merc ever ran a boat with twin Twister 2's. Those sure look like Twister 2's on Reggies Glastron.
The Jones tunnel right behind boat 192 has twins?
I guess it was a "gentlemens" agreement not to run twins. It did not win anyway. :D
Yes, the wreck was between Charlie and Sonny. The impact was such that he was killed instantly. The rescue boat had to idle up along side him and a guy jumped in the Allison, pulled the kill switch...
I have listened to many old racers that I know in this area that are familiar with that boat and the idea behind that boat was simply to be a single engine, corner quick and get out of the corner...
Looking close at the second pic with the cowl off...is that a distributor ignition?
Danny,
There is an RC boat race club that races on Johns Island. Bruce is the uncle of one of the club members and the boat is at Bruce's house and is said to have been restored and painted red....
First race I saw there.....Big tunnel with twin Chryslers comes around the bridge turn, spits the driver out like he was shot from a cannon right in front of the crowd. Next, an Allison with a stock...
My dad took me to almost every SORA race at Kings Ferry from 1970 to about 1976. We lived about 30 miles from there and went every summer. Saw dang near every kind of rig there over the years, twin...
I talked to Jim Bremmer several times over the years when he was with OMC. He told me that the center pod of the boats were exteneded way back along with the transom extention. This made the boats...
I remember watching stackers race when I was a kid. Anyone who would not like the sound of that engine is NOT a motorhead...especially not a 2 stroke motorhead. There were quite a number of racers...
