I'm still unsure about the CPBA crest. As I mentioned earlier we raced under CBF (Canadian Boating Federation).
I don't ever remember seeing that boat (is it a Cougar?) at any races here in Canada.

# 988 is Canadian Dick Summerfeldt. Milesmaster /Twister II. 1973.
#699 pickle-fork Merc-Molinari could be Bob Spalding.
In 1973 Spalding ran many North American races as a Merc factory team driver, including Peterborough, Ontario when he drove the Twistercraft;...
Didn't you drive the same SE Pinel that John Sherlock also drove...very fast SE boat with a Merc 650XS?
Bert Serra helped Mark Rotharmel in 1974 with a Merc powered U-class Molinari.
Jeff, thanks for the more accurate information.
Pretty sure #1000 is Rich Luhrs in a Milesmaster.
#1033 looks like a beautiful Sid Son.
Wasn't #1103 usually one of the Florida guys; Chick Gagen,...
Correction...should have said ' Hubercoti (sp) '
#44 - Red pickle-fork Molinari is Canadian Oley Berkis
#82 - Should be Lee Sutter
#501 - Should be Bert Serra but I think Bert is driving #581 (Hubercraft ?)
These are GREAT pictures.
I think Largecar91 is right on with Stickle #254, Downard #251 both with Merc factory team Molinaris and Kitson #119 in a Kitson/Milesmaster.
I think Willabee (Bill...
I think #177 was Don Clark.
Jim Merton was usually #187.
In 1971 that actual boat (or one identical to it?) was in the Mercury display at the Toronto Boat Show and then was driven that summer here...
The name DAFFY MARSHALL does not ring any bells with me, and I raced and was at most races in eastern Canada that year.
The Canadian V-4 OMC drivers in 1974 were Tom Wood, Jim Cascadden, Roger...
The race was in November of 1975, I doubt any of these boats would still be around, too bad.
There were 17 hulls made for the Race of Champions. Even before the first elimination heat began 2...
If we are talking great drivers from the 70's here are some additions IMO to your original list;
Mercury; Lee Sutter, Bob Hollaway, The Berghauers, Michael Werner
Evinrude; The Briggs brothers
...
That sure looks like the Twister Craft "Little Red". I remember reading somewhere that Dave Packer owned it sometime in the late 70's.
I know both Bill Seebold and Bob Spalding drove the Twister...
Rob Scythes worked on the boat in 1991.
Rob recorded this number; 84-11 on the back of his pictures guessing it was a hull number that Cees must have assigned this hull.
Rob seems to remember...
Rob Scythes did quite a bit of work on that boat when Rob Wood had it.
I just talked with Rob Scythes and he has some pictures of when he was working on it (about 1990) but Rob doesn't have a...
I think the T-4 was originally raced to out do the 3 litre OMC's that showed up late 1978 and early 1979 I think. I'm not sure Merc was even aware that OMC were working on and going to be racing...
from one of my Powerboat & Waterskiing magazines
Good point about the 1500XS being legal, but I think Merc made plenty of 1500XS's that found there way onto race and pleasure boats.
I have a feeling the 650XS was very limited in supply and...
The XS had GREAT success here in Canada, and was very competitive for many years.
Quite a few American drivers use to compete in our CBF races here in Canada, not one had a 650 XS.
I remember the SE class in St. Louis in 1980, about 20 boats and not one Merc.
I think by 1975...
The 650XS was legal for FE and SE classes here in Canada right from the start.
A few showed up in 1975 and by 1977 there were quite a few.
I had mine in 1978 and 1979 on a Seebold SE hull.
They...
Here are 3 more Tim Briggs pictures;
1) September 1973, Toronto - Ontario. Tim finished 3rd overall in the PS 100's.
2) Miami Winter Championships 1974. Maybe same Scotti that he used in Toronto...
I have a copy of Powerboat (February 1971) that has the Havasu 1970 race article.
If you want to send me a private e-mail I can maybe get you a copy of the article.
May be same boat with different number...
Here are some obvious ones and some guessing...
515 - Jim Caldwell (Merc MOD 50)
52 - John Hill (Merc MOD 50)
286 - Mike Seebold (Merc MOD 50)
444 - Curt Todd (Merc MOD 50)
241 - Earle Bentz...
Top photo; Doug Pearl #173. Doug later went on to race SJ class and did very well in a beautiful all natural wood boat - no paint. He was also well known for a 'pony-tail' that flew behind him out of...
Pictures from Modern Outboard, November 1971.
ADD: We did have some great races in those days!
Ron, glad to see you putting my November issue of MODERN OUTBOARD to good use...I knew...
Maybe this will add some more confusion as to how many issues of Modern Outboard were published.
Mine is November 1971; Volume 1, No. 6.
Publisher; Lou Kjose , Editor; A.S. (Bill) Ames.
Feature...
Brian; I think I have some pictures of your boat taken in Parry Sound 1973...befoe your nasty barrel-roll where it seemed like forever before you surfaced out of that snug...
Oley Berkis had "Big Red".
"Big Red" started life as a full front, but after blowing it over more than once, Oley and John Scythes turned it into a pickle-fork.
Here's a picture of "Big Red" as a...
Pretty sure #9 was Buck Thornton.
The "Fight Cancer" on the boat leads me to believe its Buck because 1983 was the year he had cancer surgery, plus the boat looks like a Lee Craft.
Here are 2 more Buck Thorton pics;
Merc powered Lee Craft, 1978 or 1979.
Johnson V8 powered Lee Craft 1983.
Brian; I think I have some pictures of your boat taken in Parry Sound 1973...befoe your nasty barrel-roll where it seemed like forever before you surfaced out of that snug Milesmaster cockpit. I'll...
