Phil - you are forgiven.
Like I said, I am by no means a Koenig specialist and just feeling (with the kind help from all partaking in this thread) around what my buddy and I found in his treasure...
Forensic engineering - interesting. Let me add some: we finally managed to get the book-pages enlarged and scanned. The first drawing shows the then Koenig "fishing" motor. Cross-flow design, on...
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge with me. Motor will be sold complete - no parting out. Buyer will pay transport costs from South Africa (to be determined). Any offers?...
Hi Steve,
yes, it does have deflector pistons in (it`s so basic, it seems like a close relative to the "paddle boat motor" discussed elsewhere herein). We`ll get more clarity tomorrow when I blow up...
Hi all,
attached pictures of the 50s Koenig from the treasure chest I visited yesterday. I am by no means a Koenig expert, but I think, this might be the type motor you are talking about. Most...

Koenig ad, showing correct spelling of name - o Umlaut. Source: somewhere on BRF
Rgds, Wolfgang
Now from South Africa: Well, took a look yesterday at a couple dozen motors in a private collection (what a treasure chest!). One of the motors is in fact a `50s 250cc two-cylinder of the type we are...
Gentlemen,
there was (still is) just one company in Germany which makes and used to make (e.g. post-war Mercedes 8il racecars, which had roller-bearing cranks, certain Koenig cranks also for the...
My dad had one of those in the fifties. Motors were normally mounted on a tube (pipe), which attached to the gunnels of a kajak (Paddelboot) with cast aluminium hook-like clamps. Tube protruded right...
Jeff, they loose their water-tightness over the season, but then, anything which survives 30 hrs of racing abuse is rather long-lived.
Fastjeff - they are called "duckbill" drains and the PWC people sell them. In my days of marathon racing in Europe (40 years back) we used them with great success. They last about 30 hours. They fit...
Most likely with a Chrysler powerhead LOL
That is exactly what Merc did with Force in `96 (after taking over from US Marine) on the larger models - reinforced crank and con rods (the latter presumably Merc), decent electronics, Merc...
Bill, thank you very much for the competent and comprehensive reply. Best regards.
In this context (I am just now taking up boating again after a 35 year break): would a (carburated) 2ltr Merc V6 powerhead fit under the (louvered) cowling of a 120hp Force? Disregarding issues like...
Thank you for the exciting photos.Any more info available, like technical specs, loop charged or cross-flow? With Chrysler`s awful history re head gaskets and seizing pistons, I would have thought...
Wayne, can you please let us have full title, ISBN #, publisher and sellers (e.g. Amazon) of the book? I think this will be of interest for the potential overseas buyers. best regards, Wolfgang
So I can use the Odyssey 680 after all! Thanks to y.ou all`s contributions. Rgds
I had the same thought and bought an Odyssey 680 for my `98 Force 4-cylinder (has Mercury electronics), only to be advised by CDI technical boffins upon later (stupid me) enquiry that they do not...
Ron - did you not personally build the plug for that boat which you ran at Havasu with the V8?
Would you have any plans, sketches etc. of that hull archived somewhere?????
Fully agree. Been looking myself for plans for a modv for my modded 5-cyl Force (2.1 ltr., quite a clunker).
try cdielectronics.com. Very helpful.
rgds, Wolfgang
Thanks for clearing that up John.
Many thanks Lars. Great photo - Jimbo and Renato. Looks like the boat in which Renato won the European championship in Guels on the Mosel river (near Koblenz) in about 1972. I still have a...
The 65hp 3-cyl Koenig (available in 850 and 900cc versions) was a very strong contender in UIM Class SE (850cc), at the end of the `60s. It was sold as a "stock" motor and had a slightly higher...
nice - they look exactly like the old Carniti ones. Made from plastic?
Eric, lifting strakes (among other purposes) are utilised to limit the wetted surface(s) of the hull. The Walsted Vee-bottom appears to propagate the water to the surfaces above the lifting strakes....
Based on this and other photos of the Walsted builds, I would guesstimate about 3 inches wide longitudinals in the overlap area. But, to me it appears that the longitudinal steps are the wrong way...
very positive experiences with Nippon Express. They operate worldwide and are very helpful.
Good Luck, Wolfgang
Currently building 16` by 67" racing runabout replica for Force 4-cyl with Chrysler racing lu. Double chine hull was sketched by myself with some basic design input by Ralph De Silva. Hull frames...
I am well aware of that, but that does not explain my conundrum, The Swedish aftermarket props turned out some 3/4" smaller in diameter than the works props. They spooled up better and seemed to...
PS: in retrospect still amazing that with underside of propshaft in line with underside of keel on both deep Vee boats (Grupstra and Dalla Pieta`), the motor still could pick up sufficient cooling...
The GT115 and the 55hp SE engine made their appearance with exactly that lu in `67/`68. The fact that OMC served the teams running the two different motors with props out of the same box, leads to...
The price for the Konig/Ford V-6 must be seen in the context that the Ford Capri RS2600 hit the roads in that selfsame year at DM 10000 flat. Dieter exhibited his 2-stroke
6-cylinder on his unusual...
Thank you for the lecture, Sam. I have never seen the inside of one of these, nor seen any catastrophic failure. Great OMC engineering! rgds.
I would like to add to the cautionary notes: when German S5 racer Karl-Heinz Nickel turbocharged his 3.5 ltr BMW and Volvo offshore outdrive (in a 16ft Cormorant catamaran),upon the first try the...
Well Sam, I did see and hear them at Paris - spine chilling stuff. OMC always seemed to be good for weird surprises in the racing environment, starting off with the GT115 and the loop charged...
The competition complained - therefore they were only allowed to run it on three rotors, hence the funny sound LOL
you`re right - is appears to be a cat!
Turned out nicely, but the LU appears to be too low in the water. With a cleaver you could try underside of prop hub on same level as and parallel to keel. Had good results with this as initial...
pity the photo doesn`t come with that great sound emanating from the two stacks!
apparently Ron Hill has cast a couple of small ones - why not write him a mail?
This venue being BRF, we are talking racing speeds here. NU (1650cc=100ci racing runabout as per UIM), predecessor of ON until the cats came.
rgds, W
Finally - from the man in the know. Many thanks for your contribution, Roddy. The rev range you are mentioning we would not have dreamed of with the old Chrysler in the late `60s. What flywheel did...
confirmed for UIM SE. Slotting the cowling left and right of the carbs (not legal) and jetting up after milling the head makes power.
thanks Tim - on the strength of your experience I will install a manifold.
Absolutely. And pressure as well as fuel flow increase with rpm. I am currently retrofitting two Merc double diaphragm pumps to my Force 4-cyl. One diaph. gets fed from a transfer port cover, the...
Now I know and would like to advise all mixers and matchers like me:
the post `96 4-cyl Force powerheads coming off the then Mercury (120 to 200hp) tower/gearfoot assy will NOT fit the older Force...
