    Default 1973 Evinrude 50 Looper

I Got This Motor Recently (along With An Old Merc) And Wanted Your Thoughts On It. It Is A 20 Inch Unfortunately, But A Looper, Nevertheless, From My Understanding.

Is This A Good Motor, Reliable, Good Power? How Will It Do In Comparison To Do The Nitro Case I Think They Offered Back Then Too? Thnaks A Bunch.

    Default Ask Tim Kurz

Tim is the resident expert on the OMC versions of the loopers. He would be the best one to answer your questions, as I think he may have extensive experience performing Mod's to the very engine you describe.

I know his private message box works, so you might try a PM to him. Should you need his contact info, 248-770-6897 should get hold of him.

You need to put late model rods and pistons in it.
I have rebuilt many of those used as fishing motors.
They would last at 5500rpm but by 6100 they go bang

The 2 cylinder looper from 1973 is an OK engine..not a great one...rattles the boat on idle..
has the larger gearcase..1975 and up the smaller nitro..

Ive got a '72 looper [yes, good on gas] 50 that Im thinking of making A Rat motor out of. I had it on an aluminum 15'er for about 10 years. It was a little faster & lasted [still good] way longer than an old Merc 50 fishing motor. It had stainless prop off a 115 on it so not over revving. I suspect as a RaT it will so Im all eyes on this...
