The 176.5+ speed record boat ... a V-8 with a short shot of nitrous to bring it up to speed for the kilo record. Carried Evinrude stickers, the driver was Bob Wartinger.
Since 1925, about 150 different racing outboards have been made.

I saw something that might have been that story. There was difficulty with gear cases not lasting & conditions if correct. Weren't they shooting for 200+?

I think Wartinger said he felt it was possible, but I think if they really had it as a goal, they would have continued until they got it.

In my conversations years ago with Bob, he said that they had enough dyno horsepower to go 200 but the powerband of the motor was such when they put on a prop that would theoretically go 200, it loaded the motor enough so it wouldn't pull through the mid-range. Their real goal was not necessarily to go 200 but to set the outboard record higher than the unlimited hydro record at that time to tweak a specific unlimited owner. Leigh Furnal built the boat and it had a first generation safety cell.

Don't forget Jay Fischer, he ran a Hydro in the quarter mile with a V8 and a V6, he was over 160 in the quarter.

I believe I heard that on Bob's return run, the gearcase was seizing up and it was their second choice prop as the top choice one was damaged on the previous days try.
If they broke the unlimited record, it would have tweaked the whole unlimited camp out of shape.

Actually I believe the boat was built by Ed Karelson.

Here's a link to the video of the record runs.... http://www.boatracingfacts.com/forum...ead.php?t=5922
