My recollection is the UIM and promotor did an identical exercise the last time the Mercury sponsorship of the rulebook was ready to expire. They had Tom Walkinshaw Racing set up a engine and drive and announced it to be the future. This disappeared when Mercury agreed to terms.

Who knows how long the sport can continue on 30 year old technology. The remaining racers seem to like it, Mercury claims to make money at it, and the boat buying public could care less.

While I can't speak on Mercury's behalf, I can tell you what I know as fact. There were approximately 30 SST 200 OPTIMAX motors produced last year, 5 stayed in USA the rest went to Europe for a circuit they are starting over there. I don't know the details on that circuit. I think it is supposed to be some sort of international IROC type of deal. Supposedly there are more orders for it this year this year.

There is also a version on a 15" mid section and sportmaster gear case that can be used on MOD vp , supersport and drag boats. I believe there is also an offshore version.

I don't think Mercury or two strokes leaving anytime soon.

BTW I did get to drive an OPTI at Kankakee and it is a very nice piece to race and it worked very well on my current boat. Anyone who would be stepping up and they can afford it I would recommend going the OPTIMAX route. It's the future as I see it.

Power steering is a MUST HAVE with the OPTI.

    Thumbs up 2 Strokes Forever

Might as well race canoes and sing "Cume by ya" This is far from an outboard. Kinda like an old KT boat. It is cool and it sure is fast but give it it's own class and leave F1 to the outboards. Loud, finiky, smelly, oily outboards like we all grew up with and love.
I agree, it looks more like an I/O than an outboard, give it its own class and leave
us purists alone...but it is cool!!!

Ok, take your 18,000 rpm 750 hp motor and drop it in a F1 tunnel boat, and let her rip..
Oh, you don't have one laying around? Not surprised, since they go for $1million each
    compared to a $30k for a Merc F1 motor.
What drive system do you think would work
with that power band... no clutch... no transmision.... Salt water cooling water for
when you run under those conditions.... Then in an actual race the engine is constantly
changing from full load to free wheeling as the prop goes in and out of the water every
30 seconds due to rough water conditions. Well ok so we redesign the engine to meet
the power curve and strong enough to live under race conditions, and guess what your
back to a 300hp 2.4 litre engine.. Sound familiar.. This is probably the same reason they
don't run F1 Car engines in rally races.. they need to finish a race not just be the fastest
    on the starting grid.....
The change to a 4 cycle engine will come soon enough to F1 power boats, it's pretty
obvious that none of the 2 cycle companys have a reason to stay envolved.... I just
hope it remains an outboard class.

If they allowed the current high technology four stroke engines to compete against the two stroke outboard engines, the outboards wouldn't stand a chance. The proposed Caudwell package is basically a production engine going against the best race engine Mercury can produce. Just stating some facts..........
