Tohatsu 40 TLDI -- 13' Deep Vee Runabout Propping

I am in the process of a build of this 13' (12' 8" 20 deg deep vee hull), called a Bullet 130 made in NJ in the 1980's. At present, I have a short shaft Nissan Tohatsu 40 hp tldi with power trim tilt to possibly use on this boat. Originally the boat was setup for short shafts with a transom cutout. I want to rebuild this making the transom straight across. I intend to make this boat a single seater, and I am going to estimate the hull weight at about 400 lbs. rigged. The motor weighs 205 lbs.

Mounting this outboard at 20" will require a surfacing prop, correct? If so, what type, cleaver vs. chopper and what would be a good starting point? I understand I may need to plug the top water pump suction holes or provide other water cooling means.

What are those props on the wall?

I'd give an 11 X 18 thru hub a first guess!

2nd, is like a 12-12 1/2 diameter cleaver, clear, too much dimater.

3rd picture is a 10-10 1/4 X 18 Chopper style, too small of diameter..

Testing is the only answer!

First for cooling I'd go with a nose cone but if the motor is still too high, consider a small manual jackplate.

The props on the wall -- Harry Schoell's that fit Pulse Drive surface drives.

So -- is it OK to go with the 20" transom?

French Phil -- do you mean if the motor is still too low go with a manual jackplate? I didn't think a jackplate could allow lowering of a motor below the lip of the transom as the steering, etc. would hit the transom.

Speeds anyone? I'm guessing about 40 mph? The Tohatsu tldi 40 can be converted to a 50 with a new ecu for about $1k. Is there anyone that can custom program these? The rev limiter is built into the ecu software.

The picture is Sharkey with a SST-60 powerhead on 20" mid with 60 gearcase.
Note how high the powerhead is above transom.

Eventually would like to end up with a 130 bullet with the 15" mid, to get the powerhead down.

Love the 20 deg V in a small boat.
