I forgot to mention while on class changes;
how about a splined propshaft
make it bigger so current props can be broached

You are probably right about the OMC parts, in part, but you guys in Washington run clock starts. California, Texas and Michigan run beach starts. When you take your time to start the motor and warm it up, then push it off the trailer, slowly. It is easier on equipment. Beach starts are harder on EEEquipment, I feel!
I just found out from a friend who is a Mercury dealer that these 60 EFI race motors are available from US dealers on special order with a MSRP of $8,287.50 and 4 to 6 weeks to build.. Oh, and of course no warranty...
These engines would be perfect with the 15" shaft for the flats skiff I used to build, but no warranty.

Although not offered in short shaft configuration, the late model 2stroke & some 4stroke outboards are available with a factory jetpump drive. These are often a short exhaust housing with a pump so they fit a 20" boat transom without a jackplate. You can remove the jetpump, then shorten the driveshaft, shiftshaft, and water tube to have a shortshaft 40/50/60hp outboard pretty quickly. Sometimes you need new mounting studs in the exhaust tower on factory built jet conversions back to gearcase.
