Young Stars Dominate Qualifying For Grand Prix In Kazan!

    Kazan, Russia – July 16, 2011

The newest stars of the UIM F1 H2O World Championship took center stage in qualifying for tomorrow's 12th Grand Prix of Russia in Kazan as Qatar Team driver Alex Carella earned his first pole of the year and the third of his career and will lead the field of drivers from 12 different nations on the two kilometer course six pin course on Nizny Kaban Lake.

The 26 year-old driver from Piacenza, Italy who has finished second to his teammate Jay Price on the first two Grand Prix's of the year, ran a sizzling 44.63 second lap while Price who was third quick with a 44.91 broke an engine and will be forced to start from the back for the current points leader in the championship.

“We are really happy with the way we progressed throughout the day,” said Alex. “We were quickest in morning practice and it took us a while to gain the momentum in the qualifying sessions but finally got the lap we needed and then improved it with a 44.88 and went even quicker with a two tenths faster at the end. This could be our lucky day and I'll be delighted to find a way to victory lane since its almost been a year since our last win.”

Running with him step by step in the final Q3 session for pole position was the American rookie driver Shaun Torrente of Team Sweden who actually had pole position for exactly four seconds before Carella went faster to steal it away with a 44.88 to Shaun's 44.89.

“I thought we did a great job considering I had never even driven this boat or a BABA design before today,” said the driver from Miami, Florida. “We are primed for the Peter's & May sponsored Team Sweden boat to do some rocking tomorrow and we will be ready to roll for the race and hopefully a win or our first podium before days end.”

Shaun's teammate Joas Andersson of Sweden, a two time winner in Russia in the last four starts qualified 10th quick in a BABA boat he nearly destroyed a few weeks ago in testing in Sweden.

Defending race winner and World Champion Sami Selio of the Mad Croc Team came home fourth quickest with a 45.11 second lap ahead of his young teammate second year racer Davide Padovan of Italy who held the top spot on the timing sheets for the first five minutes of the final 15 qualifying session. Padovan, who has had a pair of sixth place finishes this season will be hoping for his first career podium tomorrow afternoon.

Team Abu Dhabi will be headed by youngster Thani Al Qamzi who ran a 45.37 for fifth quickest two spots ahead of four-time World Champion and Team Manager Scott Gillman who came out of retirement after almost four years to replace for this Grand Prix Ahmed Al Hameli who received a red card at the Grand Prix of Portugal. The California driver will start seventh with a 45.97 second lap in his BABA boat.

Philippe Chiappe of France will lead the CTIC China Team tomorrow starting seventh with a 45.66 second lap while running out of fuel late in the session forcing him to run very few tours in the Q3 session. Philippe will be four spots ahead of his teammate Pierre Lundin of Sweden who starts 11th.

Italian Francesco Cantando of the Singha F1 Team will start ninth with a 46.38 while Norway's Marit Stromoy of Team Nautica was bitterly disappointed with a 14th place starting position after losing her radio transmission and missing her final flying lap to get into the top ten.

The third race of the 2011 UIM F1 H2O World Championship and the 12th Grand Prix of Russia is scheduled to begin at 1600 local and 1200 GMT tomorrow afternoon in front of an expected large crowd of fans in downtown Kazan. The race can be watched worldwide on the official UIM F1 H2O website at www.f1h2o.com.

Carella Cruises While Price Scrambles To Podium In Kazan!

    KAZAN,Russia – Sunday, July 17, 2011 –

The Qatar Team continues to roll through the competition early in the 2011 UIM F1 H2O World Championship for power boating with Italian Alex Carella winning easily from pole on a brilliant drive defeating Team Abu Dhabi pilot Thani Al Qamzi by 4.55 seconds around the two kilometer six pin race course in downtown Kazan at the 12th Grand Prix of Russia.

Alex took his first win since last years event in Linyi, China snapping his seven race losing streak while earning his second career victory. The triumph moves him that much closer to his teammate Jay Price who now leads the championship by just two points at 52-50 making the next round a week from Saturday in Kiev a key event halfway through the season.

“We had it all working our way today,” said Alex. “The team did a great job in preparing the boat and engine and I just stayed out of trouble and got to the top step for the first time in almost a year and am really happy about the rest of the season.”

While the Italian drove a smooth race out front his teammate from America scratched and clawed his way to the podium in one of the gutsiest drives seen in years, starting 15th and finishing the day with 12 points and a third straight podium and his 20th in his last 24 starts.

“I am worn out after this drama but I kept thinking about the poor unfortunate souls who were on last weeks tragic boat accident and I dedicated my drive to them today,” said Jay. “It really inspired me to push to the very last second and I feel like I gave it all I had after 40 laps.”

Team Abu Dhabi had a great day as well with their driver Al Qamzi taking a well earned second after starting fifth his his new BABA boat. His teammate and Team Manager Scott Gillman, who hadn't raced in almost four years, came home with a well earned fourth place gaining valuable points in the Team Championship for the Abu Dhabi group.

“The new boat was just great,” said Thani. “I really liked the way it handled and am happy that I will improve even more with the setup in the next event in Kiev.”

Gillman was a tired driver but satisfied at the same time, “I had a ball out their today,” said Scott. “If we hadn't had the last pace boat situation I may have ended up on the podium which would have been a great day for all of us.”

Meanwhile other teams struggled. Team Sweden ending the day with both drivers in the water and boats badly damaged with Jonas Andersson crashing out of the top ten on the seventh lap while teammate Shaun Torrente sitting in second until his kill switch came out stopping the engine for a moment slowing him down to 10th position by the time he fixed it. Shortly thereafter his boat broke apart unexpectedly in the turn three right hand corner with Shaun crashing heavily and ending his day with a broken rib.

“I'm really disappointed with the result,” said Shaun. “The broken rib won't keep me out but the boat looks like it won't be ready for Kiev. So, we'll see, we don't have much time to fix it.”

The Mad Croc F1 Team also saw their two drivers Sami Selio the defending World Champion drop out in only one lap when his throttle broke after starting third and his teammate Davide Padovan not lasting much longer going one more lap before he retired.

French driver Philippe Chiappe had a solid performance in the CTIC China boat taking a fifth place with his unlucky teammate Pierre Lundin dropping out two laps from the end while in sixth position.

Norway's Marit Stromoy had a great run of her own starting down in 13th position and moving up to sixth at the end of the event for Team Nautica while local driver Stanislav Kourtsenovsky was a solid seventh moving up ten positions from the start for the Jetechtool F1 Team.

Francesco Cantando of Italy earned more championship points with and eighth place position for the Singha F1 Team while Frenchman Philippe Tourre had a good day taking points for the second straight race for the Atlantic Team. Teammate Duarte Benavente of Portugal dropped out after just 12 laps failing to finish for the fifth straight time in Russia.

Swiss driver Rinaldo Osculati earned his first points of the season with a fine 10th place finish driving in his Team Nautica BABA hull.

The next round of the UIM F1 H2O World Championship for power boating will be a week from Saturday on the 30th of July for the first Grand Prix of Ukraine in the lovely and historic city of Kiev. It will mark the halfway point of the season and the question continues to be if the Qatar Team can keep their success that they have displayed thus far this season. Default UIM F1 race in the USA 2012..??

When I raced the UIM F1-V8 series 1982-85 there was two stops in the USA.
The Pittsburgh "Three Rivers Regatta" was very good..with 300,000 spectators..

    Old UIM F1-V8 schedule

    Lake Como, Italy
    Madrid, Spain
    Cesale, Italy
    Lyon, France
    Stockholm, Sweden
    Minneapolis, USA
    Pittsburgh, Three Rivers Regatta..USA
    London, England
    Liege, Belgium
    Milan, Itay..

Maybe it is time for a USA, Grand Prix again for the UIM F1 Serie 2012..
