Default More scenes from Orange, Tx., Sept. 2011

    1. Bud Nollman riding bareback, overjoyed after his driver Schmerbach skillfully took SST 45. Travis Thompson had the pole after winning overall in the qualifiers but bent his best prop and had to run a backup in the final.

    2. Tri Hull start, finals

    3. Destruction derby without destruction

    4. Huh? That's not a Mercury!

    5. F1 Sport, final heat

    6. Mike Schubert and Tony Terry. Mike was sometimes in front, sometimes behind, sometimes beside Tony Terry. Always where he wanted to be, outside and very wide in the turns.

    7. Tony Terry after his big win. Tony drove tight and very accurately on the buoys, he started 3rd and came out of the first turn beside Mike. Impressive driving. Lynn Simburger charged hard, ran 3rd after Glyn Matthews nosed him out at the finish line.

    8. Victory lap

    9. Tony (and son Dustin) receiving 1st prize from his fans. It looked as if about a third of the people in the pits wore Blake Terry t-shirts. It was a Terry day at the races

    10. J Class, a real service to the future of boat racing. Four of these boats are sponsored by Sport Marine. The next step in furthering boat racing is to admit GT-Pro as a national class and get it started in Texas.

From the start dock Darrell and I saw that Lynn had two problems: 2 boats in front and you coming fast from behind. See you at Baytown!

The film certainly gives the sense of how dangerous it is to drive blind through spray. I did that only once in 1977 at Eufaula. 1 2/3 mi. course with wide turns, rode blind outside Steve Hancock's wake as he swung wide, then saw an opening and passed him on the inside. I came out of the turn 2nd, had gone in 7th. Never did that again. There's a big advantage to being out front, it's a lot safer!

When I first saw this one on the water it had me smiling. I thought it was one pretty boat color combination. I have been going through pictures from Saturday (only day I could attend). Will have some done next week since I will be out of town this weekend.

Thanks Tracy. When you pulled out of the pits for your run I told the other two guys by me taking pictures to get ready. You would be fast and like to run on the edge. As you made your front straight-away pass they put their camera down. I followed you to the corner but didn't expect that. A long way off but you can still see what happen. I agree that was a really good boat. Must of been a hell of a ride....glad your ok! This picture is your straight-away run heading to the turn.

It is always interesting to look around during racing breaks. The first picture I could see she was a Long Horn Texas fan. In the second I believe....they were discussing Texas football. As least that is the impression I got.
