If i knew I'd tell ya and I'm sorry no one else has replied to ya I don't know whats the deal maybe they just don't know an exact part number. I've learned so much from these people here it's unreal. Give it some time maybe someone will chime in.

    first of all welcome aussie

some engines a carb can be the only difference but on some its port timming ,exhaust timming, exhaust baffles and even engine timming, bore sizes etc.
Best thing to do is go on the net and find the complete spec for your 40hp by its serial number then try to look up say the 50hp and see what part numbers match up.

Next thing is not complain on forums about no answers, it sometimes makes people get annoyed and you get no answer even if they know what you need.!!!
Im new on here and dont expect any answers to my questions for a while because
In the states its summer time and that means tons of boating hours and tons of racing stuff to get ready etc etc.

Is your transom a longshaft or a short shaft transom i.e 15 inch or 20 inch ???
if its 15 then sell the 40 and get a short shaft 50hp engine to save weight and stop having to jack it up 6 -7 inches.
