Default The reviving of a 40H "Mark"

Mods you can move this if needed?

I will start posting the ongoing work on my 40H. Or you can tell me to go away??

Pulled the covers and cleaned them up in the blaster.Used glass.Milled the locknut area flat on the advance arm.Nut only hit on one side, looked funny?

On to the rear cover,Big crack!! Anyone welded on this before? What rod? Preheat?

Thanks for the input and help!

    Randy,

I have a pile of engines that are in the process of being restored and I've found that for cleaning and stripping paint, walnut or plastic media work very well without marking/abrading the aluminum on Mercurys. Konigs on the other hand, must use much softer aluminum, because even the relatively soft plastic media leaves a satin finish... Friend welded some 20h side covers, recoil housing and lower unit for me but I'm not sure of the process (TIG or MIG, he has both).

Walnut (slower and much more dust than plastic)

Since 1925, about 150 different racing outboards have been made.

    Default Welding

If I was doing it, I would clean with Castrol Superclean and hot water. 3/32 diameter 4043 filler rod. Doubt you need to pre heat it.

Interesting that Merc separated the exhaust of the 4 cylinders (two and two) on their first fours, then didn't bother to do that again until the Merc 850 came out in 1973.

    I wonder why not....

Cedarburg green or red/orange ... paint wasn't as consistent back then as far as shade and hue. There are shades and colors that are wrong, but a range that is correct.
