Default New OPC Class: Trophy Tunnel

I've started a lot of classes in my life. Some have been wildly successful and then disappeared, but some classes are still around. Here's one that John Soares and I have come up with. The class is called "Trophy Tunnels". In talking to "RACERS", they all seem to have the same BITCH. And that BITCH is engine prices start out cheap then "BALLOON UP" til everyone quits racing. It doesn't matter if it Jr. Dragster, Midgets, Modifieds, or ???? We plan to keep the motor "STOCK" and that will keep the price of racing down.

John's and Mine's goal is a class that is affordable and safe. John owns a Lee Tunnel and has bought a Hoffman 120 boat. Check the rules, I'm going to put a boat together for Signature Propellers.

    Stay tuned, we'll see.

    1. ALL APBA OPC Safety Rules for SST 120 apply.

    2. 1,200 pounds, boat, motor and driver

    3. Motor Rules:
    A. 2.0 Liter Mercury V-6 ONLY.
    B. Blocks must be STOCK, no behind the liner ports: Horizontal Reed motors will be oval ports but must have "NOTCHED" exhaust ports. Vertical Reed motors can be oval ports without the notch. .030 over bore maximum.
    C. 26 CC minimum with surface gap plug screwed in head.
    D. 4 3/4 shfitable gearcases ONLY. CLE and Sport Masters are also legal. No left hand gearcases. Reverse gear must be in gearcase, but doesn't have to be shiftable.. Any Nose Cone is legal. Skeg can be added to. It in the eyes of the inspector, if the skeg is too small, the driver or owner will be required to change gearcases to a "LEGAL" one before they can race.
    E. Stock production flywheel or Mercury's aluminum flywheel in unmodified condition is legal.

    F. 12 inch or more mid section length.
    G. Any cowling or no cowling.
    H. Carb venturi diameter is the same as SST 120.
    4. Points and number system to be announced.

    RequirementsMinimum Age:
    18 years old

    Minimum Length:
    16'

    Engine:
Mercury (2.0L) stock - Max Displacement of 122 Cubic In.

    Speed:
    80-90- MPH

    Minimum Weight:
    12 00 lbs.

    Hull:
Any Design of boat including bottom, deck, cockpit, openings and seating arrangements are permissible as long as the boat meets Min Length.

This class has been requested to be "LOCAL" for Region 11 and 12 for 2013. Possible wet boats:

    John Soares---Hoffman
    Dean Wilson---Pugh
    Tito Smith, Jr.---Revolution
    Greg Foster---Lee
    Chad Hill---???

So COR style boats or are you looking to keep it to F1 tunnel style boats like Pugh, etc?

Default Right Now We Only Have Tunnels

John Soares is coming to the Hill Marine Propeller Factory tomorrow. I'm trying to contract him into building me a capsule/roll cage for my Baker.

I have the picture in my head of what I want. Any boat that makes the length rule is legal, if it has a capsule.\\Somewhat like this picture. Nets in the window, plastic windshield in front of the wire mesh! Almost like Greg Foster's Eco-Tech Chevy Racing Buggy. I'll go by and take some pictures tomorrow if it is warmer than today!

    Default Points Are Important

Trophy Tunnels will use the Russ Hill, Jr. Point System. I will post the system point tomorrow. The high point for the year will have the number 1. 2nd high point will have the number two. We will tabulate lifetime points. More on that later.

Default I Bought a 12" Mid Section, Today From Eagle One Performance

John Soares has bought a Hoffman from Rick Adams, and we are going to put this 12" mid section on his boat, and We'll put the "CLUB FOTT" (for Club Racing) on John's Lee, that Greg Foster is going to drive.

John and I are actively looking for old 120 Boats and 12" mid sections.

    Ron,
I believe Rob Dinic had an old Hoffman available. If memory serves me right it was the Aluminum Core boat he built for JR Saffold. We had the boat in our garage to repair several years ago and all the stringers seemed to still be tight and in good shape. If you can make a deal with him let me know and I can get it out to you!!

Default Well, We Want to Get One On The Water ASAP

No one knows for sure what a 2.0 (Stock Block) with 26 CC heads will do on a tunnel with a PRODUCTION GEARCASE....But, we'll let Greg "The Wild man Across the Water" find out for us. John Soares and I have volunteered Greg to be the test driver in Johnny's 16 foot Lee. Greg always like the Lees. We'll see.
