40 Mod questions...like there aren't enough already

I am more experienced with yamaha's where you can take their head plate off and make mods to the motor that way but I need some help.
My buddy is working on a 2001 mercury 40 3cyl. So far everything is stock but plans are: bigger carbs, playing with the timing, reeds, exhaust tuner, raise compression.

Unlike the yamaha, I can't seem to find any aftermarket for mercurys. Hydrotec has exhaust tuners reeds, heads, everything for yamaha but nothing for merc's.
So I guess I will be doing some custom work.

Does anyone have any tips on working on the merc's exhaust tuner and know how to raise the compression if the cylinder head is welded to the block from the factory?

Send it to Hydrotec and listen to every word they tell you. Period.
