    Default The funny thing is..

    I'd never been in the South and the rain storms and humidity were a new experience for me...California born and bread....

    In Guntersville they had this Go-Kart Track and it had cool banked turns, but if you got behind, you could cut the track and either "CATCH UP" OR GET AHEAD OF THE PACK.
    We were "RACIN" every night....about THURSDAY, IT RAINED LIKE HELL... But by evening things were "COOL" so, everyone headed for the Go-Kart Track.

    Well, big butt me, I'm behind, so, I cut the course..well, with banked turns, all the water had run to the in field, and when I cut the track, I "PLOWED" through about 6 inches of water....When I come back on the track, I'm dripping water everywhere... Guys like Dicky O'Dea (The Flying Flea)...hits the water...add: O'Dea has been HARD TO BEAT ALL WEEK...and spins out...Whoa...we can beat O'Dea.... we just need to cut the course when he's leading and spread a little water......Well, Friday and Saturday's races get interesting..

    These guys at the Go Kart Track are wring cars together with duct tape (that hadn't been invented yet) so we can "Race"...

    SUNDAY NIGHT, THE TRACK IS CLOSED, TROPHIES HAVE BEEN GIVEN OUT...

    Jeff Fritz from Yuma, AZ and I are cruising around town in the Fritz Bottleing Company truck and see about four good looking young things...We start BSing and find that the MISS ALABAMA CONTESTANTS ARE IN TOWN, BUT THEY'VE Been TOLD to leave THE BOAT RACERS ALONG AS THEY ARE ALL MARRIED...

    After we've met all of the top 50 contestants, we wondered what would have happened had we met them on Tuesday when we had just come to town???

    Default 1961 CU Nationals, Guntersville

    Sam,

    Don Christie never had a CU but at Guntersville he drove Kenny Winters Sid-Craft. That is why the number is 14-N as Kenny was from NY. Ken was also a race partner with John Schedel, thus both their boats were painted the same, black.
