July 1 1982 Michael Reagan (the President's son) set a 1041 mile run in 25 hours 11 min in the multiple engine Scarab. The total money raised that went to the U.S. Olympic Team exceeded half a million dollars.

Jeff --- Looks as they did a good job coming that close in 1963 to the satellite image of the course that you have posted. Bob

    Default Tom drove V-8's???

Tom Percival was killed in a V-8, pre-capsule days? Is this correct? Or am I confused on this one?

My wife and I hung out with Tom Percival and his wife and Bob Spalding and his wife in Berlin, 1970. Never saw any of them since...

Tom Percival lost his life in 1984 in a racing accident in a V8 boat. Tom was good friends with Cees Vander Velden and this is the time Cees Vander Velden pulled his team out of the F1 circuit and started on the safety capsule. Chris hodges was the first to design one and Vander Velden followed. 1985 was the first year of the modern safety capsule with Hodges being bolted to the boat and covered by the cowling and Vander Veldens more like todays boats and in 1986 the whole center of Vander Veldens boat was intergrated with the capsule much as todays boats. The O M C V8 boats were the first to have a safety capsule.

    From Butch Stokes:
post 234 is a Sea Craft 4 point experimental cat, most Sea Crafts were built from American Marc hull molds..I drove this boat in the 9 and 6 hour races, that's me in the picture..I broke a swivel pin in the 9 hour while running 3rd overall and 1st outboard..and the reeds let go in the six hour while running 2nd overall and 1st in class with 20 minutes to go..

Here is a photo of a Stylecraft that was found recently.
The spray rail ( crease) down the side looks to be deeper
than the one in the photo of Butch in the one above.
I looked at several other Stylecraft photos of boats from the
past and they all seem to have that same deep spray rail.
I don't think Butch ever said what make of boat the hull was
for this one. Just from the shape I am pretty certain it is not
a Power Cat.. ... Deckover is wood, which most of the Stylecrafts
all had wood decks. Just not sure.
