Might "1966 Doc ???" have been Dr. Stu Wilson in BSH, now a noted Milwaukee hand surgeon?

Where is Stover Hire. He was a perennial winner with a Hedlund BU, after Ron Hedlund.

Also checked with the boss (Bea) about Stu Wilson. She knows him from work years ago and says he's a general or internal surgeon, not a hand guy. Hands is the reason he stopped racing- fear of getting his hands injured. He still lives close by in Elm Grove.

I remember a C/D Hedlund running with a 30H. Can't remember who drove it, though. Think it was an Illinois driver.

Also remember Stover drove Dr. Wilson's BSH at a race or two. He was just as fast in that.

OK, Dr. Wilson, noted surgeon with two good hands? I'll defer to Bea. I just know he was a surgeon...

Our family had a Hedlund ASH that we acquired from Mr. Hedlund I believe at the Green Lake (Seattle) Nationals in 1968. My memory had faded some, but Jim Downing reminded me that his brother, Mike, had flipped it while running A with it. Not sure if that was during the Nationals or not, it does sound familiar though. We got it with the idea of running J with it, then moving up to A. A JSH competition record was set with it at Lawrence Lake (30.670, 1968), and my brother, Mark, won the JSH nationals with it in Beloit in 1970. The steering wheel was moved back 12" for JSH.

I had the pleasure to meet Ron and Gerry Hedlund at the first DePue Reunion in 2007. Of course I was very familiar with their success, but never having raced anything but alky, we never crossed paths until then. We had a great time talking and I took pictures of them.

A few years after that, I was at Ralph and Shirley Donald's (also phil Wagner, Billy Seebold, and I forget momentarily the other) Old Phart's reunion, and there were Ron and Gerry. We were talking like we always were at the same races. Maybe because I produced a photo I wanted them and Phil Wagner to sign of a Hedlund hydro that Phil was trying to break over at Winona in I 1975. It was 125 hydro and the motor was winding high, but it took a long time, and a body and knee on the cockpit before it ever took bite and Phil could slip back into the cockpit. Ron and Gerry both remembered that boat. I wrote about it someplace else on BRF, and I'm sure it was in the autograph thread. They said it was the last hydro they built and it was in somebody's back yard nose down collecting water when it was rescued. I don't remember the details but remember the reason Phil had the bow painted black was because of the water damage. Go to the autograph collection and there is the story written as told by Ron and Gerry. I can say I am very proud to have met and talked with legends such as these two.

Default Gerry Hedlund Has Passed 8/20/2018

Ron Hedlund just called me and said, Gerry passed last Saturday.

    I've know the Hedlund's since 1960.

A part of me just died, too!

When I raced for OMC, out of Waukegan, I usually stayed at the Hedlund's house. I was always treated like family.

GERRY AND I WERE THE SAME AGE.

    REST IN PEACE, MY FRIEND.
