As far I'm aware, the 650X was never released in New Zealand only the 650XS on a quickfoot which were used on offshore raceboats & tunnel hulls in circuit racing in the 70's.

Your engine is a Mercury 650x or a 700x not a 650xs, Most of Mercury's XS range were imported into New Zealand by the local importers Spedding's Ltd in 70's my father was a Merc dealer and raced both 650XS, 700x & Twister T2X. Trident is correct the 650XS were only sold with gear-shift gearbox's.Attachment 60239Attachment 60239

If it's anything like the Chrysler ICU Volvo used on 240's, it talks to the ICU so it can modulate ignition timing.
